Matti It might just be me but i find your posts although informative extremly difficult to read

Instead of just typing and then posting. Would you mind proof reading them? So they make logical sentences. Example -

Instead of "Foodgrade sanitiser for exposed areas in diary, Need rinse but mighty effective"

It may be easier to read if it was I/We use foodgrade sanitiser for exposed areas in dairy production, is needs to be rinsed but is mighty effective. I dont remember the name exactly but i think it is .......

P.S keep up the informative posts

Just read the Technical data base and MSDS

Used in brewing industry for C.I.P.
CIP= Cleaning in Progress (generally refering to enclosed vessels and pipes.
it is phosphoric acidic and it is all GOOD and it doesn't spoil my beer.

I know I'm being a bit of a pedant, but CIP = Clean In Place

Dairy cleaners are excellent, but usually can only be purchased in 25ltr drums or bigger

They have various types from straight Idophor to Idophor and Phosporic acid blends

They also have a straight Phos Acid cleaners as well

25ltr would last about 1,0000,00000,00 brews

But would make a great bulk buy...

Caustic is great for taps - put some 1-2% caustic in a plastic container and soak your taps in it for a couple of days, make sure you use gloves when you are using it! Not much need to take the taps apart either, especially if the caustic is a little warm. Just don't let it anywhere near aluminium or any living organism.

But for fermenter cleaning duties, Percarbonate/napisan is the bomb, followed by some iodophor or phosphoric at brew time. Why bother with all that scrubbing? Only scrubbing i ever need doing is with a tootbrush on the tap threads to remove the brown gunk from time to time.

I don't use any detergents. I just wash out the trub and fill with water, leave overnight and then use a sponge to wipe all visible traces from the inside of the fermenter, then rinse several times. I brew I day use a no rinse sanitiser. I Have not had a problem yet.

Coodgee, I think you risk getting a built-up of fatty organics (eg hop oils etc) that don't rinse away easily with water. It would be a good idea to add something with a bit more penetration to your routine.

Maybe every couple of brews you could soak in hot napisan solution, it's great at breaking down organic matter and leaving things squeaky clean. I don't use brushes or sponges if I can help it, napisan does all the work.

Each to his own though

With this in mind, NNL have just re-packaged some of these into 250 ml bottles. Should be good for only 1,000 brews though :D

wortgames, you are probably right. I don't have any visible discolouration though so I'm fairly confident. My fermenters always look brand new. do you think a little hop oil would hurt anything? my understanding is that it's an antiseptic.

I'd better watch out that I don't get a build up of crap that gradually introduces wierd tastes. It'll be so gradual that I won't notice but in 6 months time everyone else will think my beer tastes terrible!!

anybody consider sitting their fermenters outside on a nice sunny day?
UV is an excellent sterilizer

I think it's possible that you could gradually get an organic build-up that isn't visible - and anything organic can harbour bacteria and shield it from contact with your sanitiser. Over time I'm sure you'd collect a certain amount of 'grime' from various ingredients (and even from your hands?) that won't rinse off easily with just water.

The truth is you could probably do it for years and be fine, I don't really know, but I have to say I prefer the idea of dissolving everything and feeling confident that I am back to a nice clean fermenter wall each time, and I also like to avoid any kind of scrubbing action so a good sloshing around and soak with a nice hot napisan solution does it for me.

It may not be absolutely necessary, but it's cheap and easy enough, and I feel sure that my fermenter is as clean as I can possibly get it each time.

Having said that, there is some interesting info around now regarding 'microfibre' products (eg enjo). Apparently the technology is so good now, they can actually sterilize (yes, STERILIZE) some surfaces using plain water and the right microfibre cloth.

So you might be on the right chemical-free track after all... :super:

Just throw a whole roll of Alfiol into your caustic filled fermenter, light a candle and stand well back.

Sounds like a story my lecturer told me from his time at (i think) Melbourne University. An exchange student opened a bottle of ether, accidentally left the lid off. Over the other side of the lab (this was a decent sized lab), he lit a bunsen burner.

WHOOSH!

"Oops."

He ended up with a free all-over body wax and an expulsion. Top stuff!

Sounds like a lot of fun... perhaps I could use fermenter cleanup water to fuel my hydrogen powered car with the simple addition of aluminium cans or foil. Funny thing is it'd probably be a lot cheaper than what I pay now
