Hey all

First off I am new to brewing and am about to embark on my first non-kit brew. :icon_cheers:
Ive been having some trouble sourcing the ingredients that my recipe calls for though, just wondering if anyone can offer advice?

The recipe asks for;
(yeah its imperial..)

- 6 2/3 Pounds Amber Malt Extract
- 1/2 Pound Crystal Malt
- 1/2 Pound Chocolate Malt
- 1 Ounce Perle Hops
- 1/2 Ounce Tettnanger Hops
- 1 Pack Munich Lager Yeast
- 1 1/4 cups Dry Malt Extract.

None of the websites ive looked at (BrewersChoice etc) list ANY of those malts or the yeast.
They do have the hops which are listed.

Where could I source the different malts and that specific yeast?

Any advice much appreciated!

Cheers
Ash

Welcome to the forum Ash, what location are you in? Doesn't say on your profile so that will help us give you a useful reply that's close by.

If you are in Melbourne (as Brewers choice is based in Vic/Yarra Valley), then I would recommend Grain and Grape myself (Staff are BJCP judges and know their stuff). Others swear by Greensborough Homebrew Supply (particularly as Dave there is very good on the advice front), and Brewers Den Boronia (Run by Pete who has won the occaisional brewing gong).

All three of these stores in Vic are all run by guys who brew and are active in the Homebrewing community, not just franchised stores. They also don't pass on 'franchised' sorts of mark up on your ingredients' prices.

For mailable bits craftbrewer does good quality fresh ingredients and a price that will be lower sometimes than the above.

Firstly, the yeast is Wyeast 2308, and is listed in the store you mentioned, along with all the other sponsors (except mashmaster, who is equipment only) and any HBS I've been into. Crystal and choc malt are two of the most common non-base malts you can get, and are again in any HBS, including sponsers, that sell any grain. Amber malt extract should be in your HBS - those tins would be exxy to post. 6 2/3 lbs is about 3kg, which is probably about 2 tins (I think theyre 1.5kg each). Light dry malt extract again, is sold by every sponsor above and every hbs I've ever been into.

Hi, I see you are in Sunny Armidale and guess your Home Brew suppliers are a bit thin on the ground there. I believe there's a fairly good store down the hill at Tamworth but don't fancy your chances where you are there.
I would suggest looking at a couple of sponsors at the top of the Page, you are half way between Brisbane and Sydney there so take your pick :icon_cheers:

Personally, no affiliation, I would try CraftBrewer for the lighter items and try to source your malt extract locally. Maybe PM Wisey who is at Gunnedah and slips over to Tamworth for supplies, he should be able to tell you what range they carry, whether they freight etc.

October, you should just about be getting out of your fur coats and ski pants by now

Hey thanks everyone, appreciated. :icon_cheers:

Haha your not wrong about Armidale mate, im sitting by the fire as we speak and its the middle of October!

I think ill try Tamworth, I wasn't able to get in touch with them this arvo so ill try tomorrow.
Grain and Grape seem very helpful too, ill be happy to try them if the postage is reasonable.

Being new to this im surprised how quickly the costs add up, its looking like one brew could cost me about $60, not including postage/shipping - is that normal?!

Na, most brews cost me $20 to $30. If you use bulk grain (or extract) and reuse your yeast you can do brews really cheaply.

Excellent Ash - good to see you've figured how to put in your location. I think Craftbrewer would be the go over G&G as they are closer k's wise for mail-order (just south of Brissie in Underwood). Check the prices on what you need on the respective sites, but you may find that Craftbrewer is cheaper I suspect.

Cheers,

Hopper.

Hey mate
I grew up and still have family in armidale and when I was up there last there was a shop near armidale high along the road that follows the railroad track did not go in so dont know what it has but as far as I know it is still open. I was there only a month or so ago.
Cheers

Nah that is getting pretty high cost mate. Not sure how you're arriving at that figure? I know what you mean though, especially if you have to buy more than one type of hop for a brew.

Some people here under estimate the cost of home brew because they're still using the 25kg sack of grain they bought in a bulk buy 2 years ago, and same with hops. But look at current prices of well over $10 for a 90g packet of hops and I'm personally trying to do only single hop beers.

When comparing to commercial beer try and compare to the more premium stuff, e.g. the $60 per carton range. If you work it out that way home brew even at the expensive end is still about half price.

hi guys i live in perth WA!. i was down at the local brew shop looking for some specific hopps to get my brew on and they didnt have what i was looking for.. are there any big suppliers that will have the range and multiple quantities i am looking for...
