I'll admit it: I've sucked the end of the hose to start a siphon. Not my proudest moment, but when you gotta transfer beer, you gotta do what it takes.

If you buy the tube to siphon just put under the tap to prime with water and that can be poured into a container and then continue with the beer into the bucket or bottle with the siphon tube you want the correct length and if filling bottles not too big as can go too quickly.

Wow, great photo Bunnings.

It's quite possible that the pump has non-food grade lubricant/grease in it. Could taint your beer.

I am curious about one thing. Could you just use the tap and bottle it straight out of the primary fermenter? The only reason I was thinking against it was a concern about getting too much sediment/yeast in there.

Where are you located mate? If you are anywhere near inner North of Melb, I can give you a gravity fed transfer lead. Works exactly the same as a jiggler siphon. Stainless steel ends, with beer grade tubing.

You sure can. In fact when you were talking about syphons I figured you didn't have a tap in your fermenter. If you can crash chill your brew at around 4C for several days it will clear up and the sediment will compact at the bottom, under the tap. Run the first bit of beer into a bucket to clear the sediment in the tap. Use a 'little bottler' attachment which pushes onto the tap.

Bottling the way you first suggested can work well but possible downsides include increased rick of infection and oxidation.

If you crash chill then tilt the fermenter slightly its possible to syphon most of the clear beer by having it clear of sediment and if any left get a funnel and pour the remainder into a plastic bottle and put back into the fridge and let to settle again.

You can bottle straight from the fermenter. The only reason you'd transfer to another bucket for bottling would be for bulk priming. If you aren't doing that then just bottle from the fermenter.
