Over there she should feel lucky that she was allowed access to the internet, let alone social media, being a female and all.

Female on internet?

Straight to jail.

No problem with the Internet in the UAE I think dating sites and all Porn sites are banned. Setting up ISS websites might also be frowned upon.

Look out for the Lamborghini Patrol Car parked in the disabled park outside. Dubai is just an hour up the road in that.

Just for anyone who thought I was being unnecessarily sexist.

She's lucky she wasn't posting something bagging craft beer somewhere else on the internets and then someone on AHB caught wind of it. The rage of a few thousand balding overweight home brewing keyboard warriors has proved to be as vicious as a backwards assed middle eastern justice system in the past here when one of those women things gets on the internet.

When I was in Jakarta I was told about the Internet restrictions so I type ****s on my Ipad and got a notification on the screen that basically told me that the ministry for communication wouldn't allow me access.
Makes a bloke wonder if " some" access should be blocked here as well ?

So - people are interested in what is forbidden?
Well colour me surprised.
@OP - never easy to work out the truth from media articles but as far as I can see, this woman needs unequivocal, unnerving and unswaying support from embassy/government and public here.
This **** isn't on in general - when we can make some noise about it, we should and we can.

She's in jail in a foreign country mate.
I understand your dislike of the beardy nerd thing - I share some of that distaste with you but slagging off a blogger does not compare with the state/a state incarcerating someone.
I know it was a joke/shitgive but it wasn't your best one yet.

Update : she is being deported bit harsh one would think.

P.S. had two mates put in Abu Dhabi prison for a month in the 80's for punching an Arab prick at a party. They said is was really tough sun baking all day not having to go to work and food supplied by the Sheraton Hotel.

( food brought in though by friends ).

Better than 50 lashes of the cat o nine tails for sipping a Fosters in Saudi  Guess they didn't ban VPN yet in the Middle East.

there are no women on the internet

IMO, go to another country (especially one such as this) and break their laws and deserve what you get.

go to asia and do drugs, you deserve the harshest penalties they give.

dont like their laws or think they are unfair? you're welcome not to go there and find a country with laws you do agree with

Funny how the UAE turns a blind eye to prostitution though. Some of the hotel bars in Dubai are worse than the girly bars in Bangkok's Patpong area.

I like to scratch off the 34 and write 33. I've been a 33 for years..

Well, to be fair, she wasn't specifically asking Abbott to help sort things out, she was asking the country to do so.

Anyway, she's been released.

Personally, I can't understand why anyone from a western nation would want to work in such places. I wouldn't go anywhere near them. I guess the draw of high wages and low/no tax appeals to some. I value my freedom over money.
