Hi guys,

Fired up the renovated brewery today - what an awesome day! So much easier!

The improvements are:

a) New Brewstand! c/o the ozbrewer sale
B) New boiler - 80L c/o the ozbrewer sale
c) New imersion chiller c/o the ozbrewer sale
d) Hose snaplocks on all connections
e) New transfer hoses - clear for wort with snaplocks, hose for water. All c/o bunnings who now sell "brew hose" in 2m lengths.
f) Sight gauges/glasses on boiler and HLT - latest build project of mine dealt with elsewhere.

The combination of all of these made the biggest difference.

To start with, underletting the grain was easy as. People were concerned about my sight gauge being on the HLT outlet and me getting depressed readings. This was totally fine in practice. In fact, the depressed reading (1L or so) is a great safety factor - no chance of overheating the grain. I always check the temp of the grist with 1L to add, so this works well with the way I brew. In fact I'm calling it a design feature. It works in reverse when filling the HLT, as the pressurised hose clips onto the outlet, increasing the reading. This works as a safety feature here too - I can't overfill the HLT. Like I said, I'm calling it a design feature!

Next the snaplock fittings on all the hoses just make life easy. Easy. So easy.

The stand means no lifting - well not much anyway. Gravity is my friend.

The big boiler is awesome. No boil over. Not even a chance of a boile over. Not even a hint of a boile over. The froth only came 3/4 of the way up. Burner on full bore the whole time. Did I mention no boil over?

The new chiller has about twice the hose length as my old one. Its about twice as good as cooling stuff down. Its fast. It saves water. It cools wort. Does it get any better?

Anyway, it was a streamlined and easy brewday. No hitches. Awesome!

Things to change/fix for next time:

1. Have two "marker orings" on each sight guage. This time there was only one, and it worked well being able to mark where things were going to drain too. But I think two are needed - then I can mark the "From" and "to" points.

2. Measuring the gravity of the sparge is hard when things are snapped locked on. OK - its not hard - but you do have to stop the sparge. I'm going to make a transfer hose with a tap in the middle of it, so I can take a refract reading without stopping the sparge.'

3. The stand needs heat shielding! The wall of the shed (colourbond) got too hot to touch. So I'm going to put something around to protect it. Suggestions?

During the brew I made a hop sock holder - the one for the old boiler didn't work (speaking of which, Bonj, its all yours if you plan on using a hop sock with that new boiler!). So I quickly bent of some stainless to hold the hop sock:

Finally - I spent ages calibrating the scales on my new sight gauges, and also creating a new equipment profile in beersmith (with NO loss to trub!).

All the volumes were exactly as predicted - which is a first for me ever. Most times things are out by 1L or so - but now, 100% on. I expected 39L of wort, and got 39L of wort. I expected 3L of trub, I got 3L of trub. Does it get any better than that!

Like I said, awesome brewday!

Can't wait to do a big beer on the new system!

Oh - and nearly forgot.

Despite initial height concerns, there was no issues with getting the wort to the boiler, and wort from boiler to fermenter. The heights are pushing it, and its slow for the tail end - but it does it. No pump needed.

(until I get the big 100L conical I want - then its a whole other issue!)

Yeah yeah! I'm there!

I'm so close to losing my AG virginity!

Great stuff Mobrien! Was there any boil over with the new burner? :D

InCider.

Looks fantastic Mobrien!

The "Brewers Hose" from Bunnings - is it normal clear tube that sags at high temps or Silicone tube?

Its PVC tube - but thicker than my old stuff so an improvement!

Just make sure it's food grade, especially if it's handling hot wort.
you can't beat silicon tubing IMHO...

cheers Ross

Yeah ross, it is food grade - couldn't find any silicon in a hurry.... Will be looking for some though.
