The problem with ambient temps is that what is usually discussed is the maximum only. Last winter (late Autumn actually) I had 3 beers stop at 1.020 in a row. The maximum temps were all good for ale brewing, but what I didn't think about was the min temp. I think that's what killed my ferments each time. In my opinion a cooler bag is the minimum amount of stuffing around I would be willing to do to minimise the temperature fluctuations. Anything that insulates against the sharp ups and downs at this time of year is well worth the bother.
