There are actually a few advantages to reusing yeast. Not sure exactly why (could make a few guesses) but with some strains the second generation seems to produce a better beer (3068 is a classic for doing this), and it's not a pitch rate thing.
One advantage is you have a larger population which decreases the lag phase and the following process. More numbers sees less stress on the yeast. The yeast also become acclimatized to the environment somewhat.
US05 (sadly main yeast atm) throws little in the way of esters and i've cone-to-cone pitched 8 odd times. A mate of mine used the Kolsch strain (2065) which he noticed improved performance and flavour on batches 2 to 4, after that the yeast got flabby and did not perform as well.
