Heh. Its amazing what you think and do after a session at the local.
 
Why the need for insulation ? If you're doing BIAB (as I suspect - the bag;s in a photo) couldn't you just place a wire trivet into the keg so the bag isn't touching the base, then spark up the burner a couple of times through the mash to keep the temperature up ?

I use a pot that only just fits into the oven, so I can keep it warm that way, but am soon stepping up to a larger capacity, and didn't plan on insulation, but rather the method described above.
 
The way I see it that with insulation, once I get it to the right temperature I cover it up and walk away. No need to check, come back in a hour and is done.
 
Places like the reject shop or sams warehouse or whatever tend to have them for about $6ea, they went out of fashion for a while, they used to be $5 but I've seen them for $6 at the reject shop since they came back. Don't use a burner near them, I've made that mistake too haha.
