I have also had the thought of filling it with water and chilling it a day or two before brewing - especially if I plan on steeping some grains and boiling in some hops... however I have not been that organised yet, but having icy cold water to offset boiling hot water when trying to get the wort to pitching temperature would be a very handy thing I rekon.
i do this, and a couple of trys of ice cubes from SWMBO'd stash in the inside freezer (no GnT's on brew day) and i get my pitching temp bang on ferment temp quite easily...
when i'm not prepared i wander up the shops and get a bag of ice, dump the ice in the fermenter and pour my boil onto that...
the blue 20L willow jerry is a very handy bit of kit... picked mine up for 8 bucks at the local markets, guy had a truck full of them, he claimed they'd only been used for powdered milk in a disaster relief kind of thing... i didn't believe it but it was squeaky clean, no smells and i gave it a few dammned good washes first.
