    Group Barley wine tasting

I was cleaning up the shed and cellar yesterday and come across a few of the barley wines that were brewed and swapped during a club activity 3 years ago. Turns out its about 3 years since the brew date, so it'd be worth a taste! For those who weren't around then, we brewed about 140L of barley...

    Gas bottle refill in Newcastle

Where do you Newcastle brewers get refills for Gas bottles? I've been calling around gas retailers everywhere and the bastards only do swaps of their rental bottles. Seems like a bit of a racket to me, saying you can only get their gas with their bottles. I know Duane at Toukley has the same...

    Buying new bottles

Does anyone know where I can buy new bottles to put my beer in? Ideally I'd like to get Champagne bottles, but swingtops or normal longnecks would do. My wedding is coming up in a year and I plan on doing some beer as wedding favours, so I want them to be clean and consistent. I am not really...

    Newcastle pub crawl

Hey guys, Is anyone interested in catching up for a few beers in Newcastle one weekend this month? My house is walking distance to Broadmeadow station, so you could meet up at my place for lunch and try a beer or two of mine then either walk to Beaumont st to go to the Blind monk...

    July club meet

Hey brewers, Time to start thinking about the next brew club meet. It will be Sunday 13th July 2pm at Glenworth valley. Dick has kindly offered his house as the venue and will be cooking up some spicy boerwors sausages with a Belgian pale ale. The address will be sent out on the mailing list...

Bottle conditioning Barley wine outside yeasts alcohol tolerance

I'm brewing a barley wine with my brewclub this weekend and am thinking ahead about how I will carbonate it when its finished. We are brewing about 200L of barley wine and dividing it up into 25L cubes and everyone is fermenting it with different yeasts. I'm going to use a Munich lager WY2308...

    Group Barley Wine

Hi everyone, I thought I would start a thread for a Brew club activity of a group brew of a Barley wine. Basically, interested brewers state their interest in brewing a beer together. After a bit of discussion here on what the recipe will be - we will all get together one weekend at Toukley...

    Club Direction for 2014

Hi all, after another small meetup this weekend, we would like to try a few new things with the club to generate some more interest and improve the clubs activities. 1. Regular, scheduled meetups. Approx. 4 per year / Every 3 months where we all can catch up, swap brews and maybe cook a BBQ...

    Double Boil?

Today I was meant to get a sneaky brew off before mothers day celebrations. But alas is has been a comedy of errors. My initial plans were to wake up at 5, mash in and start a long complex mash cycle (I have a braumeister), followed by a long boil (90% Pilsner malt, NoChill = trying to avoid...

    April meetup this Sunday

Hi Everyone, In case you missed out, there is another meetup this coming Sunday 3pm at the Long Jetty park. We will be holding our inaugural brew competition - Pale ale. So bring one along if you've got one. If you don't turn up anyway and you can judge our efforts. If you have an entry, bring...

    Beer and apple juice

Has anyone ever tried a Braggot/Cyser without the honey? What I mean is a Half beer half Cider frankenstein brew? It would be thin and light, but I'd imagine it could be similarish to a Berliner Weisse with a fair amount of acidity from the apples rather than the lactobacillus. Anyone had any...

    Filtering a DIPA

I've got a mates bucks party in the first weekend of March which I have brewed a few kegs of beer for. The last one to finish up is my attempt at a Pliney the Elder clone. Its just finished fermenting and is currently sitting at about 4C in my ferment fridge to drop as much yeast and hops before...

    Hipster alert!

So this is what our fine hobby has become. After the good ol days of our fathers brewing for economics then the AG/BIAB revolution, now we arrive here at hipster brewing. http://vimeo.com/51318855 Is this a good thing? I can see the motivation - homebrewing is great fun and the small batch stuff...

    Imperial IPA Trub

I just started my boil of my Pliney the Elder Clone. 400g of hops for a 22L batch :super: But in my planning, I anticipated a large loss to trub with all the hops, so I brewed extra wort to account for it. But my question is - Where should I remove the trub? Do I siphon all of the wort into my...

pH meter - Useful or not?

To those more scientific brewers out there - Is a pH meter a worthwhile purchase? While I recognise the importance of pH in brewing, I was wondering if measuring pH and trying to correct it would just be chasing my tail with the complex buffering reactions going on in the process. Perhaps...

    How fragile is beer?

I've sent off a few competition entries into the Melbourne Beerfest yesterday and it's got me thinking. It will probably get pretty hot somewhere in transit over the long weekend - How will this affect my beers? I know getting beer hot is bad. But how bad? Is 2-3 days of sitting out really going...

    Hydrometer Krausen

Brewed a tripel yesterday. 60 seconds of Pure O2 and repitched onto a large amount of Wyeast 3787. I took a gravity readying before going to bed and this is what I woke up to. I got rid of the krausen the first time and it built up to this within 30 mins.

    Electricity/pump Box

Hi Everyone and particularly any sparkies out there, I have just added a new pump to my Braumeister brewery for rapid immersion chilling (a la Jamils Whirlpool chiller) and with this addition of an extra cord and extra tubes with liquid, It's got me concerned with the risk of electrocution in...
