I harvested from a starter, first timing doing so and noticed that the sample i harvested has this thin dark layer on top. The yeast is a nice white colour pic is bad. The layer on top is not very compact either. What could it be?

I get this too, but has never caused me any issues when using the yeast later on. My thought is that maybe it's some break material or something from the DME (if that's what you used for your starter), even though I would have thought that it would settle under the yeast layer

Yeah it's weird I've never seen it before, I guess it is break material but as its so loose I guess the yeast fell through it when dropping put
