Whisky Distilling

I know its not brewing. But a mate of mine doesnt drink beer, but he enjoys hearing about and watching homebrewing. I would like to convince him to start buying his own whisky making materials, but i dont even know anything about it....
what are everyones experiences with whisky making equiptment? oppinions?

It takes years to make a nice whisky, is it worth it to try DIY whisky? what are everyones experiences? oppinions?

Our opinions are that its not legal and we don't talk about it here...
