I've only ever used candi sugar "rocks" which never showed the same complexity as homemade (same say faux-made) syrup.
Re-heatings? I've tried just about every technique I have managed to source from books (eg: Hieronymus, Mosher) and the 'net.
I get consistent and satisfactory results from the Homebrewtalk topic posted earlier...
