Howdy brewers,
it's been ages since I was on these forums due to studying a degree (which I've now finished thank god).

I'm thinking of getting back into brewing as it's been a good couple of years since I've made anything. Probably longer since I've checked in here on AHB.

I typically like hoppy beers, my favourite recipes used to use lots of Nelson Sauvin, Columbus/Tomahawk, Citra etc...

I started brewing 3V, then started building a single vessel automated rig with PID control box that went well but the last few brews I put down were on a gas fired boiler/esky mash tun combo.
I still have all my gear...just no ingredients besides a couple of packet of 3 year old hops :)
The last time I was here, everything was 'braumeister', 'braumeister', 'braumeister' etc..

So my question is, what's changed over the last few years that I would've missed out on? New ways of doing things, new vessel systems, new ingredients......whats good?

Cheers and looking forward to kickstarting this brewing thing back up!

BN

Few more off the shelf single vessel systems available now- grainfather, robobrew, etc.

Beer is still made with malt, hops, yeast, etc

Forum is same but different.
Welcome back

Cheers mate!

Grandfather and Robobrew? rightio....I'll have to look into those. similar to BM I suppose..

Grainfather.

And williamswarn if you have a rich relative, recently deceased who thought you were ok.

WW is a potential extension of your single vessel, not a replacement.

The pressure ferment idea it touts is not new but has gained steam amongst HB land and there are different systems being trialled with similar outcomes in mind.

Were the hops in the freezer? Should still be good if they were ;)

Was no-chill happening when you last checked?

There's also still contention around rehydrating dried yeast, and whether or not you should use an airlock ;)

haha, yep my hops have been in my freezer/kegerator... I have another thread going about that exact thing actually in the hops section.

I have been a no chiller for ages so that was definitely around when I was last brewing, although i haven't checked my cubes since the last brewery. They are currently filled with a 3year old napisan solution :) Might go buy some new cubes maybe...

I'm also a happy glad wrapper, so the airlock threads are fine by me..

I'd say the resurrection of yeast freezing and pressurised fermenting have gotten a lot of focus recently on the forum (not that they never did before), or at least have gotten a lot of play the last few years. Also LODO brewing (LOw Dissolved Oxygen brewing) has had some time in the sun, moreso in the States than here, but there are definitely some active adherents here. There's been some nice work by Adr_0 on modelling HEX coil length and volume (unfortunately I'm having trouble finding the thread), and then there's Husky's special brand of pornography. Oh yeah, and the Williamswarn threads mentioned above are good for a laugh, if they haven't been too heavily sanitised.

There's a pretty long thread titled something like "Get in to O2 guys if your [sic] serious about nicer beer".
