Off for a holiday to a little place an hour south of Perth in a couple of weeks. Apart from the Sail n Anchor and Little Creatures is there any where else I should have a look at when wanting to sample a fine ale? I know this has probably been asked a hundred times before. Sorry :(

There is the Last Drop Inn in Warnbro/Safety Bay

and for a day trip there are plenty of micros in the Swan Valley or down Margaret River way.

Hey Steve,

I lived in Palmyra (Fremantle) for a while some 9 years ago.

There was a pub in Freemantle that wasn't bad.

All I can tell you is that's it's not far from some colonial era stone embattlments and a cliff, but I'm sure if you asked a local on the street they'd know what you mean...if it is still there of course :blink:

PZ.

Drop into a pub called Clancy's in Fremantle. They've got some great microbrews on tap, including a fantastic black lager from a new brewery called Mash. Worth a try. Also try the white beer from Feral brewery. Great fish n chips too as a bonus.

Little Creatures is overated. All their beers taste the same.

For some others try "Brass Monkey" in Northbridge and a quick trip up Beaufort St to the "Queens".

They are Matilda Bay pubs but each one has its own beers on tap. Queens has a huge range. Very impressive. Always has been one of my favourites.

Forgot theres even a section of micros to visit when in Perth.

Howdy Steve,

I used to manage at the Sail and Anchor back in the America's Cup days! Another pub is the Norfolk or, 'Norfolk and Worries,' as we used to call it, which is 200 yards south of the S&A. Nice pub and probably still has good beer. Try to visit on Fri-Sun as the Fremantle Markets are open then. Both are Matilda Bay pubs.

Also from there if you head towards the water and cross the railway line (5 minute walk) you'll find, 'Fishing Boat Habour,' where, 'Little Creatures,' (mentioned above) is based. Certainly a unique pub/brewery and worth a visit. Lot more to see around that location as well.

Now, let's get on to the only topic more important than what beers to drink...

WA has the highest per capita population of good-looking women I have ever seen. You'll probably not want to take my word for this so go to...

The Left Bank (Saturday night or Sunday Arvo)
The Cottesloe Hotel (Beer Garden - Sunday Arvo)

and you'll see what I mean ;) The tap beer is lousy but you won't be worrying about that too much will you?

If you are an hour down south, go another hour (probably a bit more?) to Pemberton and Margaret River. Beautiful countryside and atmosphere. Climb the, 'Gloucester Tree,' in Pemberton and post back here to say that you drank a beer at the top for us!

You'll have a great time.

Cheers

My experience of the Brass Monkey has it serving the same beers as the Sail and Anchor, but personally I prefer the atmosphere of the Sail and Anchor.
There's a site called http://www.microbrewing.com.au/ and if you visit the WA section it'll give you names and generally locations of all the WA Microbreweries, some worth the hassle others not, but worth the adventure anyway.

Was just chatting to my niece on the phone. She reckons your wife would enjoy herself just as much as you at a lunch at The Left Bank - lol! Skip the Cottesloe though.

Here's a link about the Gloucester Tree

I deal with heights every day but climbing this was an experience! A great one though.

Thanks very much ML - always up for an adventure!. I cant wait. Thing is my brother in law is the, how can I put it without insulting anyone? :ph34r: type of guy who'd be happy to go halvies on a case of VB each night. Not that there is anything wrong with that (much). Is there any of those microbreweries above sell cases that I can take back so I have something decent to sip on whilst fishing/lounging around doing nowt?

Hi there,

The main locale for micros over here at the moment is the Swan Valley. You've got Feral, Duckstein, Mash, Elmars who all brew on the premises.

If you just want pubs with a good selection in the city I'd try:
Sassella's Tavern:
Boby Dazzlers;
The Adelphi;
Belgium Beer Cafe (aka West Ende);
The Brass Monkey;
The Moon & Sixpence.

The Queens os a bit further out and not unlike the Brass Monkey.

The old Swann brewery there is a micro brewery in the hotel ther you can get a sampler with about six different beers in it next to the Swann river cant get any better than that .

went there when I went to see England V South Africa at Subiaco stadium in the Rugby World cup .

Pumpy :)

Hey Steve,
This subject came up earlier this year here
We have a plethora of Micro's, if you have the time to get 'down south' (Margart River or Pemberton) there are a few that have a great reputation both in their beer and their grub. Bootleg Brewery (Raging Bull Porter is to die for) and the Colonial Brewing Co have bottled beer to take away :)
Enjoy !
Cheers

Hows about the new Indian Ocean Brewing Co in Mindarie here is the link, My Webpage , I have not heard anything about the place, but the beer menu sounds good. Little Creatures is not over rated, its a cool place where its all about the Pale and if you go on a Friday, Saturday night or Sunday arvo the eye candy is bloody good and the pizza is bloody good too.

Cheers

WA sounds like a real beer drinkers heaven!!! :beer:
Thanks all for the suggestions.

The link below is the best winter pub in Perth. In the hills outside Perth, about 30 min drive. Beautiful scenery! They serve proper pub food like beef and guinness pie, fish n chips etc...

The beers: Try the Darling Range selection: I love the cask conditioned Thunderstorm lager and the dark lager but there is also a Pilsner, a Mild (which is a lager) and a Wheat. This fellow was brewing in the mid 80's, before Matilda Bay, according to the fellow who setup the Duckstein. And in his words he is a good operator.

If you don't make the drive upto the hills the Darling Range beers can be sampled in Nedlands, which is very close to the centre of Perth:

If you are in the valley checkout Ironbark:

http://www.ironbarkbrewery.theguide.com.au/

and the beautiful Rose and Crown where you can have beer underground with the rafters just above your head. Just like being somewhere like Oxford. Couldn't find a decent link :(

Thanks kir! My Wife is going to get the shits big time :beerbang:
