Had a great time over West - its a beautiful part of the world. Didnt get to do as much beer sampling as I would have like due to my little boy and wife getting the flu and me breaking my foot (pissed).

Visited three microbreweries in Margaret River and was only impressed with one, the Colonial Brewing Co. Great beer, great staff who were willing to have a chat about all things beer. I bought a sample paddle with six middies to try each beer. There was the Spruikers Challenge (Kolsch), Dr Quick Strong Ale (English Strong Ale), Pistol Whip Bitter Ale (Scottish Best Bitter), 18 Hands Brown Ale (NE England Brown Ale...cant remember the rest...im sure there was a wheat aswell. You could see the brewery through a big glass wall. - it was that good I even bought a hat and a mixed six pack to go.

The other two just didnt seem to give a stuff about their customers willing to spend lots of money and try all their beers. The first one (I wont mention names) had a range of beers that had food in them. Not one plain old ale or lager. I tried the chilli ale and lemon and honey lager. Both nice (and different  ). There was only my family of three and two other couples in the place. When I asked the barman if he could let me have a quick look around his brewery in the sheds his reply was no because im serving you. He glanced down the bar at his assistant who was reading a book. He said once she finishes her coffee break i'll take you. His assistant raised a very bored looking head from her book and glanced at me for a second and returned to reading her book. Nice I thought...its not as if the place was packed to the rafters. I finished me beer and didnt bother waiting for his assistant to finish her coffee. I thought well you can get stuff too. Very disappointed.

The other naff one had nice beer but didnt give a stuff about the customer asking questions. Yes Im sure they've heard it all before from home brewers trying to spark up a conversation. For example I tried a very nice APA and when at the bar getting another I jokingly said to the flustered barman that it must've been dry hopped with a ton of cascade. Didnt even reply - just raised one corner of his mouth and kind of laughed. Jeezus I was only trying to make bloody conversation about their beer! Not one sign of the brewery, not even a poster saying guided tours every five minutes - nothing. Did buy a mixed six pack to go though.

Spent a day in Fremantle, starting off with Little Creatures. Great place, great beer, great atmosphere. It was packed so we headed off after I had a sample of the three beers on tap - LCPA, Rogers and the Bright Ale. I was in heaven

Walked up to the Sail and Anchor, the ladies and kids went off to the markets and my brother in law and I parked ourself upstairs on the balcony overlooking the street buskers. Had their ESB, Pilsner and a Wheat (I think) These were very nice and refreshing as it was getting hot.

Time for lunch - jumped in the cars and headed to Clancys for a seafood platter n beer! What a great family friendly place that was. It was packed. Great service, food and huge enclosed grassed yard for the kids. By this time I cant actually remember what I had to drink. But I can remember finishing off with a Guinness!

That was a great day out and to top it all off I broke me bloody foot. Pissed, going to the garage for a beer, tripped on a bloody skateboard in the dark and rolled down the very steep driveway in agony. It hurt that much I even put off the thought of getting my beer from the garage. I crawled back inside and me brother in law got me a beer instead. He remembered to turn the outside light on.

So yeah - great place, great holiday and definately recommend the west for a trip. (Just dont tell the locals you are from the east side)

Cheers
Steve

Glad to hear you had a good time Steve, I have had a similar run in at that place. They just said no to a tour however and then when I quizzed the barman over what the base beer was for the chilli beer he told me it was a wheat and that the hefe was their lager , can't say I stayed there long.
