hi guys havent been on for a while but starting again today some advice plse over here in nz at the moment shes quite bloody hot and want to put down a black rock nz draught and been told to keep it resonably cool and was wondering if i set it up in my wood shed would it still brew out ok temperature fairly consistent out there more a case of worried about infecting the brew, other option is in garage but steel garage so gets rather hot in there during day any advise appreciated cheers cosmo

How warm does it get in the shed? If it gets warmer than 20 degrees i'd be lookng at cooling the fermenter.

cheers rudi the wood shed is fine its actually quite cool so only has trellis at one end and open the other with a iron roof designed so the breeze would just air the wood out basically so thought would be a prime area to set a brew up also but just worried about infection thanks again mate temp in house 30 degrees and in garage would easily be about same or worse

I actually have an old fridge that I use, we were going to stick it on Trademe to get rid of it but lucky enough I was too lazy to do that and now that I've started brewing it comes in very handy - usually just leave it turned off while I'm fermenting but whenever it gets a bit hot I can stick it on for a wee while. Also very handy for cold crashing.

But if you don't have a spare fridge, if you have a container or tub big enough to sit your fermenter into, you could do that, put some water into it and drape a towel over it to wick up the water and keep it cool. You can add some ice too if it gets really warm or you are targeting a low fermenting temp.

Here's a nice example of one guy's setup for that idea with the addition of a fan: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f13/temperatur...l-budget-77158/

Looks like that shed could get hot during the day with the plastic roof, probably would be cooler indoors during the day. The Blackrock kits say you can ferment it anywhere between 18 and 28C but most advise on these forums is to ferment it at the low end of the range as the higher fermenting temps can lead to off flavours. I am now aiming for 20C +/- 2 but my first brew was done around 24C and it turned out good.

keeping it cool during the day with a wet towel round it been brewing around 22 mark but still to hot and its a lot worse inside at least there its getting the breeze.really wanted to put a lager together next but not in this heat
