Just pondering, just throwing it out there for discussion.
How much steam and alkaline liquid really would get INTO the bottle in the dish basher? The mouth of the bottle is not very large and it has a wire rack thingy stuffed in it. So maybe not much would get squirted in so you'd rely on steam rising, but if the orifice is closed somewhat.... maybe it is more that the HEAT would act upon the inside of the bottle? I'd reckon 95oC would do the trick but I am just pondering.

Yes you probably should rinse sodium perc, but to an extent that is what the sanitiser does apart from sanitising? What would you rinse sodium perc with otherwise? Wash in sodium perc and then rinse with tap water? Wouldn't that potentially have bugs in it? Wouldn't it be better to rinse with cooled boiled water? Probably not going to happen. What is worse a bit of residual soapy stuff, or potential residual greeblies? Interested to hear opinions.

I reckon that if the steam actually contacts all the surfaces it would be a winner. But I cannot see how that would happen unless you jerry rigged a shelf for the dishwasher to sit in about the middle with the necks of the bottles always pointing down

As for the rinsing. I rinse with normal water and then use starsan straight after. No problems yet but I'm not very experienced.

Well I always rinse soak and rinse again after use but Ive had them sitting on the mezzanine at work and they are dusty again so was going to wash them in the dishwasher then sanitise them.

I was at G&G today and didnt even think to buy one of those bottle sanitisers. How much are they roughly?

I bought mine a few years ago so I don't remember an exact price, but they wouldn't be more than $30. Its a fairly simple contraption. Well worth the outlay IMHO.

Happy bottling.

JD.

Never ever have had had residual soap from a dishwasher. I know the darn things use a LOT of water because I put in my 19L pot in the wrong way once and it was filled to the brim when I opened it. There is a LOT of water going around in there and I suspect that the dishes get a lot of soaking. And with the speed of the water shooting out of those jets, with sodium perc in the mix, you only need so much to hit the inside of the bottle @ 95C!

I'd steer clear of the dishwasher in my current place though. It only heats to 70C and I've found that it didn't clean the bottles properly the one time I tried. I think it really is the heat that helps more than anything, and that its heat in a liquid medium to carry away the dirt/yeast rather than dry heat in an oven. In other words, if the dishwasher leaves your dishes HOT and dry at the end of the cycle, its prolly worth doing. I didn't use to be able to pick them up too comfortable with the old one.

Roughly 25 bickies. Get one, once you use it you'll wonder why you had not previously.
You can buy a bottle draining tree and these plug onto the top of them. I would be distrustful of this (but have not used it this way) because it takes a bit of force to shove them down onto the bottle rinser and I wouldn't want to rattle/upset a bottle tree like that. I sit my bottle rinser on the floor so I can just shove the bottles over it. Apparently a bread crate is perfect for holding heaps of bottles whilst they are inverted and drying...

I rarely bottle now but have a rinser that I use on top of a bottle tree, never had a problem.

yeh I just asumed everyone had one of those contraptions

How do you reckon 750ml bottles would go in the dishy?

Would depend on the depth of the dishwasher and what arms on the inside swing where I suppose.

Yeah thats really a try it and see question. Mine has a arm bottom and top and it washes dishes better than any iv'e seen. I have a shitload of swing top 750ml bottles so im hoping it will do the job. Last time I put them in the oven which would be ok because it holds 20 bottles but they ended up with black dust on them because the fan blew some burnt **** on them :(

Do you guys not use one of these?

They are the best thing since sliced bread (as far a bottling is concerned). You put the starsan solution etc in the bowl and press the inverted bottle down onto the central spring loaded pin. This delivers a squirt of sanitiser into the bottle that drains back into the bowl. Plunge several times and bung the bottle onto a drying rack (or bread crate etc). You get into a routine and it doesn't take long.
HEAPS quicker than filling bottles and transferring to the next bottle.

Best thing I have bought. With getting all of my stuff together I can bottle in an hour on my own. I just rinse my bottles well after use. Just before bottling I give them a hit of starsan out of the vinator and put them on the bottle tree (also give that a spray with starsan). Too easy. $30 at my LHBS, well worth it.

my 2c - must rinse sodium perc with hot water to get that slimey residue off, even the 100% stuff from beerbelly

a bit OT, but i made one of these ages ago that hooks into the laundry hot water. leave the bottles on there for the time it takes to have a schooner and fk me are they hot afterwards. i just bottled straight into them

ended up changing the heads for the red ones and they gave the perfect spray

Will have to get one from G&G next week.

I just scored myself a breads crate when I dropped the missus at work. I cut out a bit of plastic in each second square so the bottles sit in their more upright. Should work well to dry my bottles.

My dishwasher is getting on (13 years old & counting) & only has a rotating arm on the bottom. Many aeons ago when I bottled my 30-bottle batches I would stack all 30 in the dishwasher for "sterilising" NOT cleaning.
Now, I always triple-rinsed with hot water after emptying a bottle (still do) & so reckoned that all bottles were pretty clean before being "sterilised" although once in a while I'd give them a good clean in the laundry tub with a bottle brush & dishwasher detergent before rinsing.
IMHO there is NO CHANCE that a dishwasher (my old bugger anyway) can actually clean the entire inside of a 750ml tallie given the narrow neck on said bottles.

While I realise that the dishwasher temp is not 100 deg c & that I never actually "sterilised" my tallies I never, in years of doing this, had to toss out a beer because of an infected bottle.
I never sanitised my bottles back then but do now when using my CPBF which just goes to show how lucky I was. ;)
Almost forgot --------- After taking the bottles out of the dishwasher they were left on racks out in the sun to dry & we all know how hot glass gets when left in the sun? Sterilised? Who knows?

TP

it was too easy, everything came from buggins. all i really needed to do was drill the holes for the conduit with a spade bit (holds the bottles in place), and drill small holes in the poly pipe for the sprinkler risers. the old mans one is better using a black poly recycling tub, as my one cracked from UV exposure. then i went to kegging!

if you really want to check how good your dishwasher is just load it up with manky bottles that have week old sediment caked to bottom. if it doesn't get the sediment out then choose another adventure

What's old is new again kymba. :D
Have long since lost the pic of my 10-tallie bottle washer in an old computer crash. Very similar to yours using ag fittings but was attached to the side fence in the garden for convenience & now hangs in the garage taking up valuable space. Will take another pic when I get the chance. :icon_cheers:

awww man...just when you think you are a space monkey it turns out you are a sheep

Just a heads up..dont fill your dispensor completley with SPB. It started foaming up to much and came out the bottom of the dishwasher all over the floor... :icon_cheers:
