Ok, I put it in off-topic, so all should be good there.

Last night downloading some data transfer software for PC-to-Commodore 64 I got a dialler :(

Now, I've since found one dialler (which I even caught doing it's thing and pulled the plug before it could contact it's 1900 Isreali porn line or whatever) and heaps of other stuff like data miners, tracking cookies and the like, but still having issues.

I've done sweeps with Norton Antivirus, Adaware and am monitoring with Zone Alarm.

Everything apprears clean, BUT...evry time I go to hotmail.com extra brouser pages open up for the usual kinds of crap like porn, dating sites, gambling etc.

Any ideas people? Please, help me, I don't know what I'm doing here

Oh, and just before the dialler dialled I found desktop shortcuts to gambling, dating and porn stuff...which sounds like some virus/spyware I heard about ages ago...dunno the name tho...

If you are running XP try a restore point to a known good date or try Spybot search and destroy. You can dl for free just do a google on spybot. Sometimes you have to run a couple of spywares to achieve the desired outcome. Or when all else fails its time for a reformat and reload.

OK... here are some good programmes...

1- AVG. It's a virus checker, you get it free from www.grisoft.com
2- I agree with bighanno, spybot is great
3- Adaware. This should get rid of those popups

The programs already mentioned are very good.

Another excellent line of attack is google (or whatever your favourite search engine happens to be.)

Put in a few keywords that you want to search on, such as "dialler browser popups removal" will give you lots of useful info.

This line of approach works for many problems, if you are getting some sort of error message, cut and paste the error and plug it into google. You may want to refine your search by adding your software such as XP, 98 etc.

Go the old C64!

If the popups only occue when you go to hotmail it sounds like you have picked up a browser hijacker. Some of these are really nasty to get rid of. There is a tool called hijackthis which can help. Its pertty techy stuff but there are forums out there that will look at your hijackthis log and walk you through the removal process.

Try here - http://www.tomcoyote.org

The above advice is sound, but probably will be ineffective in such infestations (restore aside). HijackThis is a great utility also, but you need to know what you're doing to run it.

I would also recommend getting Spyware Doctor - it picks up a lot more than both Adaware and Spybot which seem to miss a lot these days.

You might also have a look2me or VX2 infection so grab a copy of CWShredder also.

Point your browser at Merijn.org for a few different tools.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi FB,

These things are often not easy to get rid of (I should know I've been a computer "professional" for the last 14 yrs or so. My advice - download Ewido (antispyware) and a trial of NOD 32 (probably one of the best anitvirus programs around). Install these and do updates (just do a search for the on Google) - restart your pc in safe mode - press and hold the "F8" after the pc posts (ie - counts up its memory and shows you what drives it has etc) and select safe mode from the menu, then do full system scans. U could also try downloading and installing Lavasoft's Adaware (more than one cleaner is always good) - if these simple things don't work it gets a little more complex and might involve using MS Config to knock out certain programs / processes etc. If u cant get rid of it, often the best thing 2 do is reinstall windows and get all your protection software on there first - its easier to keep something clean when its already clean - this is worst case mate coz dialers are usually pretty easy to get rid of.

If ya need any guidance just PM me or something - I dont mind!
:)
