Hello I'm a virgin ! and are building a mash tun for a 3 V system. I'm thinking on going with a 100L system. Should I use a 100L esky ? or go for a 150L rectangle ice box best quality! Or Larger ?
Is there any height grain bed that you have to have ? Can it be to shallow ?

Hi Virgin
You will not need a mash tun the same size as the kettle but as mentioned there is a need to keep the grain bed relatively medium depth.
I would suggest 3-6 inches would be good and easy to recirc thru. It really depends on how you intend to sparge and if using a recirc system like a Herms ?

Have a read of this, it will give you a good run down on what you need to know.

If you're looking at a 100l system you won't need a mash tun that is the same size as your kettle. I've got a 50L kettle with a 40L mash tun that is rarely more than 1/2 full.

If you're going big why not try and get a big pot and use that as your mash tun.? You can probably get a 70-80L one for a similar price to that of a massive esky.
