I have a question for those of you who have used willamete:

- what flavour best describes this hop (bittering and flavour addition).

actually two questions:

- what is a good substitute from NZ or Australian hop varieties?

My research shows that styrian goldings/fuggles or ekg could be a substitute. Since these aren't grown local what about Southern Cross or a small amount of Green Bullet?

Cheers

I haven't used 'em before but Beersmith states that they're mild, grassy, floral and slightly spicey. For substitute it recommends Fuggles or East Kent Goldings. Hope that helps a bit.

Grab yourself a Squire's Amber ale for a reasonable indication of Willamette flavour and aroma.

fuggles would be the direct replacement obviously.
But if you wanted oz/nz replacement, you could try the NZ goldings..?

Good Day
I have some NZ Fuggle flowers so they are/were available.

I bought some NZ Goldings flowers this week from one of the sponsors above.

edit: inserted "flowers"

Fuggles is the direct replacement.
Goldings is far to perfumy and Girly to be a replacement, even styrian goldings are a little to spicy.
Fuggles and willamette have more orangey/marmaladey character that is appealing to my palate than Goldings.

That was my understanding too

Willamette is interchangeable with Fuggles and visa versa

Cheers

More that they are from similar origins, thus not too far away. Sure that they are US grown fuggles...

I am suprised Willimette are hard to come by though....

EKG = Girly...... there's a new one, you just completed the BJCP course.? :p

I can get Willamete but I am tryng to buy my fresh things (veges fruit hops grain etc) from as local as possible - anything from the US or Europe travels too far.

This means I won't be using some of my favourite hops (from europe :( ), but I want to reduce my households carbon footprint if I can.

But the kiwi hops seems to fit most bills :) .

Cheers.

Noble idea but ultimately pointless as x amount will be imported regardless of whether you do or don't purchase the odd 100 gms.

Taste is everything obey your taste buds!

I got a spicy kinda taste in a brew I did with Willamette, wouldn't have put it anywhere near the earthy flavours of fuggles, but that's just me.

Im not a fuggle fan....... i used it recently to see if i was wrong but hated it.

Willamette is a different story. Its milder and spicier.

I actually dont mind it. I always liked JSAA.

I made my porter that im drinking now with heaps of it and its very nice.

Fuggles seems to be a love it or hate it hop with most brewers but most you talk to will say they like Willamette........ it seems to apeal to the Non brewer types to.

just use the real thing...... it wont melt the ice caps.

cheers

Great way to balance things up, Global warming due to carbon emissions balanced out by the amount of geothermal loss created by NZ's dependency on it for heating, would that be double jeopardy?

Offset that against the Sharkbait Emissions Steamtrain.... :p

And we owe the word a great deal....

I am withy Tony on this one - I like both hops but in their place.
I am not so sure Fuggles is a direct replacement.
I have had similar experiences to Tony most poeple who try a "Fuggled" beer pick up an "odd" flavour where as Willamette leaves them wanting more.

As I said - like em both but I wouldn't normally change one for the other

Cheers,

Craig

I totally agree with this suggestion.
