Was wondering if the stout atachments that are available for beer taps are worth getting.

As per my other post i am thinking of going to a 3 tap font and want 1 tap dedicated to stout. I am even thinking of getting a nitrogen bottle for it.

Is it worth doing or is the plain tap with Co2 good enough?

cheers

Stout taps work great, the one's with a variable flow control are by far the best though...

variable flow control?

I was just on the andale website

and i didnt see them but thats not to say they dont exist hey :p

is the nitrogen worth looking at do ya recon

If you're intending to have a stout on tap all the time, then maybe it would be worth the investment. Then you would be able to make proper guinness...

the stout attachments screw on - so then u get the best of both worlds - ie if u dont want the aerator - take it off.

Yes, but if you want to do it right you also want the nitrogen/co2 mix as well. Two gas bottles to rent ?

Doc

No hijack intended,
I scorred a bloody big co2/nitro mix bottle in a council clean-up a few weeks ago.
Its empty, but i'm keen to get a re- fill and do the 'real stout' with the aerator in my tap.
gone...........

thats what i thought GMK. If i want to go to a porter or something else i can unscrew it but i love guiness, i really love the stuff. I buy a 4 pack of cans with the nitrogen wigit in them when i go into a bottle shop, which isnt often these days.

I would kill to have that on tap.

Doc.... true but $100/year isnt that much in the scheme of things.

How much does a schooner of good AG home brew cost, 20c maybe if that!

thats a saving that pays for a bottle rental.

and having a smooth AG stout gassed with notrogen on tap all year round would be worth it.

Who here would pay $100/year to have Guiness on tap at home?

I would B)

OK so is Co2/nitrogen mix or strait nitrogen better for kegged stout?

Tony,
I am a stout fan too, and have made my best one recently (after years of trying) ( pint of in hand now! ).
And every sip i have i think, 'hmmm how would it be with nitro and aerator'.
So i am with you , i gotta give it a go.
Im gonna put it on my must do home brew list !

I love the Nitrogen/Co2 mix, the problem is that N2 is not very soluble, so you need relatively high pressures, 150200 kPa to get it to go into solution.
Naturally you cant pour at this pressure.
The restrictor reduces the flow to a manageable rate; the N2 comes out of solution very quickly forming millions of small bubbles, leading to the famous Guinness effect.

Andale taps dont have flow control, I havent found it necessary if I use a 70/30 N2/CO2 mix, but flow control definitely makes getting a perfect pour easier, I think the Lancer DA tap does have flow control.

I got lucky a while ago and scored a blender board, this mixes N2 and CO2 from separate bottles, you can dial a mix.

cheers mark, do they have a website?

Preassure is not a problem, the "comercial" kegs are good for 415 kpa.

but lile you said the pouring preasure would be difficult. I would need a lot of linr to drop the reassure

Will have to ring BOC in town tomorrow and see what they have available.

is the 70/30 mix standard or can you pick what u want?

cheers

Oh and ross........

I noticed you have a "Smoked Porter" in CC.

are u making it for someone else?

thought those smoked beers were like onions.... :)

how much smoked malt did u use?

cheers mate

LOL - just 200 gms mate, experimenting for the mash paddle (kegging tomorrow) - i don't mind a subtle flavour like in your scottish ale - but full on smoke in beer just isn't right in my book....

cheers Ross

bloody skirt wearer :D

15 to 20% :beerbang:

I only used 1% of my "iron bark smoked malt" in the scottish 80/- i sent to the beerfest comp. I used 2% in the scottish i made when you and the rest came round for a brew day/piss up.

The score sheets said "smoke dominates the aroma and flavor"

i used 20% in the iron bark ale. Its almost a year old now and just starting to smooth out. and is it smokey, tastes like a bushfire, i love it!

My wife cant stay in the same room when i have one in the glass, she recons it smells like a fire at the tip.

I dont think its too bad but wont be smoking my own malt again.

cheers

Lancer Pacific, you would expect a website.

N2 / CO2 Mix (N2 is first)
50/50
55/45
60/40
70/30
And thats just BOC

well i have been thinking of going to a 50/50 mix for all my beers.

Is this a good ideah?

does anyone out there use the 50/50 N2/Co2 mix in their keg?

any comments on the results?

cheers
