Sometimes you forget how big, really impressively huge it is

Just to clarify my post above regarding driving conditions, picture attached below. That's when it all comes to a standstill.

When all that compacted **** starts moving at illegal speeds of 160KM and above it gets quite interesting. And it happens all too often.

A former workmate of mine is into bike riding, his club was contacted by a couple of poms who were coming down under and they asked if it was possible to hire some bikes and cycle to the little village of Elliston ( on the west coast of South Oz ) as it didn't look to be too far on the map.
They changed their minds when told Elliston is 160 km away.

Should've set them up with saddles full of snickers on single speed bikes ;)

I camped next to a Syrian bloke in Emerald a few years ago. He was riding a pushbike from Sydney to Darwin. Even after getting that far, he was still gob smacked that it would be a couple of days at least between roadhouses across the centre for him. I hope he packed more water like I told him to.

Cheers,
RB

And even the Americans get a shock when they realise some of our cattle stations are bigger than the state of Texas....

Wat?

Have you got a source for this? You are way off, appears to be a reoccurring theme in your posts.

Worlds largest cattle station is 24000 km² Texas is 696241 km²

On the other side of things I was in Russia just short of a year ago doing a pushbike trip. One of the guys I met said in Russian "oh Australia, it's not very big is it". I initially started to correct him then I remembered that Russia spans nearly half the circumference of the world and is massive; compared to Russia Australia is pretty small.

I remember being in Canada and and spoke to some Americans were amazed that it took over 5 hours to fly from Vancouver to Montreal. "That's just as long as New York to LA, your planes probably aren't very fast". They couldn't believe it could be similar distance even if the map clearly shows it.

I bought a motorbike recently to travel Australia. I've done pushbike trips elsewhere but haven't done long ones here. There is so much distance between things in Australia that I would get bored at pushbike speeds. Also having travelled a fair bit here as a kid it doesn't spark the same curiousity motivating me to do long bike trips.

In conclusion to my ramblings Australia is big and sparse, by the standards of most people.

This map shows how you could fit Great Britain, Ireland and Europe into a space the size of Australia with room to spare!Capture.JPG
