Guys,

There appears to be heaps of the 19L post mix kegs around. I wanted to get the smaller kegs - so I can brew smaller batches - fit more in the fridge...

The 10-12L kegs new are about $165 bucks - I have been unable to locate anywhere - second hand smaller kegs ...Any ideas???

Rare as hens teeth mate! If you want the smaller kegs youre either gonna have to try and organise a bulk buy to bring the price down, or front up the cash...

Just use 19L kegs and purge with CO2 and fill to what ever level you like. The smaller kegs are not really cost effective. However it is only a once off purchase......

With the 19L kegs....You'll end up drinking the beer anyway!

A guy I know who used to work for a very large fast food chain scored some 10L post mix kegs when they upgraded all their equipment. Maybe you could look into seeing if there are any places near you where you might be able to do the same.

I used to work for Macca for quite a few years. They used to use 10L kegs - just suprised that they don't turn up anywhere - ebay etc.

I think I will go and speak to a few owners I know at Macca and see if I can score some for free.....

I've heard of people cutting the 19L ones in two and welding them back together again but shorter. Might be expensive, and not so pretty.

Ive got one of those beasties from quite a few years back before 9L ones were made available. Handy to have but not worth the time, effort, and cost to cut it down. I could have bought a new one cheaper today than what I paid for it. Besides you cannot get a clean weld on the inside or grind it back, unless you have hands the size of a toddler, and its a nice little hideyhole for nasties.

Cheers

Now wouldn't that make a great one for youtube or funniest home videos a toddler with angle grinder or a die grinder going full bore

My mate bought a 19L $60 and had a sheet metal worker cut it down to 5L and tig welded the join
it looks great, the tig weld penetrates through to the join on the inside.

It works a treat fits in those coles cooler bags with ice bricks for a party or engle fridge

for what its worth just buy a new one will last forever and clean, if you start putting 5 or so litres in a 19 your gas will disapear very quick

If space is the issue, then you probably can't do much better than the Tap-A-Draft system (6L PET bottles).

For $200 you could set yourself up with 6 bottles (ie 2 full batches) and a dispense head.

A quick and dirty ideal gas law calculation tells me that if you assume 4C storage temp, and a balanced system (ie the headspace pressure is just maintaining carbonation), then there's 44.6 mol of CO2 dissolved in each litre of beer PER VOLUME OF CO2 CARBONATION, and 79.6 mol per litre of headspace. so for 2 volumes of carbonation, there's 89.2 mol per litre of beer, and 79.6 mol per litre of headspace

Ie, you'll use less gas with 5L of beer in the keg than you will with 19, especially bearing in mind that they're filling with gas to the same end volume, 19L of headspace when it's empty. Not a lot in it though, it'll be roughly the same

EDIT - Fixed calculation, really shouldnt do calculations after beer on the back of an envelope
