I'm currently upgrading my mash tun and I'm looking for a place that supplies silicone washers, ideally in Melbourne.

I've searched the site and read a lot about cutting up silicone cookware and I've actually found a place where I can get a small sheet of silicone. This sounds promising and I should be able to look at this tomorrow.

Fibre washers are not going to work as the surface I'm trying to seal is not as flat/smooth as I'd like so I'm needing something a little thicker.

Has anyone been successful in finding proper silicone washers.

most nuts and bolts shops will have them.

coventry fasteners or the like.

I have used Willow cookware - its just to cheap and easy to use...

Cheers

Likewise, go to a $2 dollor shop or similar and get a silicone baking dish, that way you can make lots of spares :D

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions guys.

OldBugman, I'II try a couple of nuts 'n' bolts places before I look at the silicone sheet.

Jye, Thanks for the link. Didn't look there.

Barra,

Unfortunately the pipe is 5/8". But thank you very much for the offer. Most appreciative.

a question for those using silicon bakeware washers; was the bakeware you found flat? the only stuff I could find in $2 shops had sort of ribbed/corrugated bottoms, and I suspect that would cause problems getting a good seal although I'd be happy to hear otherwise

Jerry,

Perhaps if the surface of your mashtun is irregular a good fix may be using a fibre washer with a squirt of silicone (Roof & gutter or food grade if you are fussy?)between the washer & the mashtun. Works for me.

G'day Lucas,
Mine was flat with a textured finish on one side. No leaks on anything :) .Keep looking :) Perhaps a 15% of everything sale at those dept stores might be the go.

G'day TidalPete,

I actually used a food grade silicone when I was puting my first mash tun together a year ago (still using it) and it worked well.

I still had some left so I tried to use it on the new one. The surface is slightly imperfect but my main problem is that the outside wall isn't parallel with the inside wall and therefore needed to use more silicone to 'even' it up. I don't know whether the silicone is too old or whether the esky material is not compatable with the silicone but even after 2 weeks it still hadn't hardened.

I managed to get a small offcut of silicone sheet on Friday which I should be able to make some reasonable washers out of. Hopefully I'II get a chance this week.

Cheers

I've used a silicon O-ring I bought from G&G which compresses heaps but accommodates the curve of the pot, etc. Squishes up real nice.
