Big Al led me down the dark path to home coffee roasting!

I bought 2.5KG of El Salvador beans a yearish ago(I still have 1KG left). To roast them I use a popcorn maker and cool them by dumping the roasted beans into a steel colander and holding it up against the extractor fan in the bathroom(To SWMBO's disgust!).

I gleaned most of my limited knowledge on coffesnobs. Last beanbay was on Wed 18th so you may have to wait a little while until the next one.

You wont look back.

Oi Chilla, where is a good place to get a cheap popper in Perth?

I'm a heat gun dude myself - a $30 heat gun, $5 dollar steel bowl and a $2 dollar wooden spoon lets me do 1/2 a kilo at a time. I used the home roasting machine for a while but it's not a patch on the heat gun - especially when you add a bread maker.

I really wanted an espresso machine so I bought one for the wifes birthday.

Ive got the Breville Cafe Aroma machine also. Ive had it 18 months and it works well for the price. Just buy the freshest beans that you can get.

Just recently bought myself a Sunbeam conical burr grinder and a decent plunger. Can't do much better than that for $150! Beats the hell out of buying $3 coffees from the uni cafe, complete with near-mouldy pre-ground beans, mmmm citrussy tang! Just like grain it's best ground as fresh as possible.

Home roasting is next on the coffee agenda for me.

Jeez, just typed the word, " Greenguys" into Firefox.
Coffee you say?

Chilla', Big Al was also responsible for my own downfall.

I've got a Rancillio Silvia with a Iberital grinder - and they are both great. Been roasting green beans - from Coffeesnobs for a few years now too. Just bought another 5kgs during the week. Roasting is very easy and you get top quality coffee

I have a $20 el cheapo mystral number from Big W(Poss WA Salvage - RIP) I think? It hasn't missed a beat. IMO - if you dont overload the machine (EG:use the popcorn measurer) and wait 15minutes between roasts there should be no reason why it will burn out. A lot of people burn them out but I assume they are overheating or overloading the machine.

I use a heat gun mainly cos I can roast a decent quantity and already had all the required equipment. Give it a go Sinkas, you will be amazed how easy it is !

Well its good to see Mods and Admin have moved this to the appropriate sub forum,Hey RM ;)

Any way I've got one of these cheapies as well and it makes a lurvley short black with plenty of sexy Crema.

I really can't fault it. Consistently makes a better cup of coffee than I can get at any of the local cafes.

Cheers,
Greg

You must have a teaspoon with a long handle. The real secret is the engravings of the flowers on the teaspoon handle.
If you don't have the engraved flowers the coffee just does not come out right.

The secret to coffee is to drink it very sparely. Then when you eventually do have it you really feel the effects.

cheers

Grow my own, Quandong Range Bourbon and another Guatamalan variety whose name escapes me. Also grow Tea, easy to prepare, roast in the oven and enjoy whatever way you like to prepare it. Home grown green tea is beautifully smooth.

Oh, to live in warmer climes!

Hey Screwtop, where'd you get the tea plant from?

Does this sudden interest in coffee give me an excuse to stock some coffee machines (I would of course need to do some "testing")

Hey Screwtop, where'd you get the tea plant from?

From a friend who grows Tea and Coffee in the hinterland. Tea plants were grown from seed sourced from the DPI in North Qld, Innisfail or somewhere I think. Dead easy just pop the leaves in the food processor for a few seconds to chop them then just put them out to sun dry between two layers of wire gauze. The leaves are not fermented like that black *****. The taste is very mild and refreshing.

She won't sell the plants, but if anyone wants some of her fantastic coffee or tea, let me know, can PM her business contact details. Her coffee and tea is is terrific, she also grows saffron and vanilla bean.
