Gaggia of 6 years went bang - raided every last schekel from the cookie jar and just brought this.

DSC00913.JPG

Fully Stainless
14 Bar Pump
Twin Heat Exchanger

First impressions are positive - lots of grunt.

Now all I have to do is find a way to incorporate it in my brewing somehow...

Coffee - its what I drink when its too early to drink beer!

Its better than instant ******** and keep my missus happy as she dosnt have to wait for the espresso pot on the stove. The froth pump was good at first (dont know how many bar, prob somthing **** like 2 or 3) but has started to give way after 2 years and now its easier just to heat the milk in the nuclearwave and just give it a good squirt after its warmed up.

actually my mate noah wins, he works at ceres cafe in melb (yes the self produce one) and they gave him one of these to permantly mind as they got a brand newie at work :

Ok, no affiliation other than my personal experience here...

My Family has been in coffee business as long as I have been alive so we have had a few machines over the years.

I got one of these Breville's last year (all us newlyweds could afford) and honestly it makes better tasting espresso cup than my dad's ($2k+) Bezerra Italian beast.

I have the same problem with weak steam pressure for milk but I am liking the short blacks anyways so I don't care. last time I looked these were under $200. I had intended to splash out on something like roger's as soon as I could, but now I am too scared of being disappointed!!

If you are considering going this way my advice is save dosh on the machine and make sure you have a good grinder. (I wonder if that applies to grain mills too??) A good conical burr grinder + one of these will ruin Starbucks for you in about 15 seconds.

Long live the cheap and not so nasty!! :beerbang:

Roger, What Brand and model is it?

Mine is a Rancillio Silvia for everyday and a big Bazzera for special occassions.

Bazzera has been cleaned up a bit since the photo (including putting the side panel back on)!

Roger,

Is that an Isomac Millennium Two? Nice bit of gear. I have its older brother, the Isomac Tea (which has to be the most stupid name for an espresso machine in the world).

Been very happy with mine - build quality is excellent.

I have had a lot of success with a coffee stout using about 200ml of cooled espresso from the machine. Comes up a treat.

Do you roast your own beans? Ultra fresh coffee and it can be a lot of fun tailoring a blend to suit your tastes.

Cheers,

Gwyno

The same model was Choice magazines best coffee machine for under $1K. My brother bought one and no complaints from me. I use one of the old school stove top espresso pots but it is cast aluminium and is starting to corrode/oxidise and it is getting the arse.....might be time to get on the Breville band wagon!

No affiliation etc etc

I've got the old Silvia/Rocky combo. I don't think I'll ever upgrade it. It's built like a tank and feels like it will last forever.

I also roast at home. Just like beer, it's so hard to buy a cup of coffee that's as good as what I make at home. Good coffee is so easy to do, yet 90% of cafes don't have a clue. Unfortunately, like beer, the general public seems happy to drink bad coffee too. I'll stop ranting now...

Banished to the OT section - what a load of bollocks. To quote the Blues Brothers - Fcuking Nazis.

fhgwgads - Yep its the Isomac Millenium. Dont know if thats I or II - but it's the latest one as the dude imported it from Italy as he had run out of stock.

No I havent tried roasting at home - would like to give it a go though - where do you get the green bean?

RM

Roger, I get my green beans either at coffeesnobs.com.au or ozgreens.net.au. The first is a commercial operation and the second is a true co-op. They buy bags of green beans from the importers then split them for members. The prices are great - only a buck or two a kilo above bag price and a small fraction of buying roasted coffee. Coffeesnobs do monthly polls and turn over a lot of beans where as ozgreens are a little less regular. Both sites have forums like this one on all things coffee related.

One of these - Gaggia Evolution

and one of these - DeLonghi kg100
delonghikg100.jpg

I would love something a bit more "pro" as it takes a little bit of effort to get a good crema but it will do for now.
I need to get a proper Tamper and source some green beans locally to roast my own.

Roger,

The links goatherder suggests are good sources of green beans. www.greenguys.org or www.coffeeco.com.au should also be able to sort you out.

Add a $20 air-driven popcorn popper and you are in business - it will be the freshest coffee you've ever tasted.

Is that it? A popcorn popper!?

Will look into it - thanks Goatherder.

Whats the best popper to use?
I heard using a Paint stripper gun and a stainless bowl was antoher easy way...

Basically you want an air-driven popper that will circulate the beans in a circular fashion. I have used both Tiffany and Black and Decker popper in the past.

Whatever brand you are using you should check that the vents that blow the air are arrange around the outside of the roasting / popping chamber rather than on the bottom.

The process itself is pretty simple - a good explanation is at the bottom of this page on roasting-

Coffee Roasting

Make sure you don't use more than about 80g of green beans each time. The temptation to do a bigger roast always ends badly...

I used this method with great success for about five years before buying a dedicated home roasting machine.

Cheers,

Gwyno
