When I was young Martha, I used to go to the local pub (no homebrewing shops, let alone forums in those days) & could order my favourite beer with a dash of either lemonade or sars. they were very popular in the late 50's-early 60's. The good old sars shandy at around 50\50 was sooooo refreshing on a hot summers day. :beerbang: Have a go at it when you need cooling down. Is there anyone else old enough to remember this?

I remember shandies, but they were only drunk by women.

Man, I'm only 31 yesterday but I know about the good old Shandy :)

My mum still drinks them from time to time and I must admit that the first time I ever enjoyed the taste of beer was as a kid when it was mixed with Lemonade

my first taste of a shandy was on a school excursion to the riverland.remember the bus stopping at some deli and us way smart young boys buying some brand name shandies until the teacher wised up to what they were.my short memory must guess they were once a legal 50/50 mix of beer and whatever back then.

cheers

He can't help being a Victorian. Give him a chance to learn.
Maybe you'll mellow with your 70th coming up in march.
A few spelling & punctuation lessons wouldn't go astray either. :D

closely following in age

The only problem is that mixing soft drink with lemonade reminds me too much of a friends' party I went to once (I think it was his 16th) and people were drinking beer in coke to avoid being caught drinking... funny, I must admit, but it has tainted my opinion of your average shandy

mmm shandies campise hotel beer garden mid summer I was about 11-12 grandfather got me a middy of shandie I was Such a big boy that day, what with the heat and the stress of the old man walking it was like a basket ball down and up mm good memorys

Fast forward 28 years my old man makes a shany out of my first AG beer I ever made to strong for him, WTF this is real beer not VB!!!

Always drank beer with a dash of Sars in the 60s/early 70s. Bit girly I suppose but a great summer drink. For winter we used to have a real mans drink - Open a stubbie, drink it down to the top of the label then top up with Green Ginger Wine. Does anyone remember that mix?

Boy, four of those on the riverbank fishing in winter and then off to bed in the sleeping bag. If you could find it, with your eyes in the wrong sockets!

The good old large ginger beer special. 1/3 Ginger Beer, 1/3 Lemonade, 1/3 Beer. Great when I was 15 and out playing golf, everyone thought it was just softdrink :super:

Screwtop.... is that 'stones' you are talking of.?
i remember having a session with that mixed into VB's.. obviously quite an improvement.

My Granny goes the VB/ lemonade shandy's. Always remember opening her fridge to find an open tin of vb with gladwrap on top. Hate to think how it's tasting on the 2nd and third day.

Pumpy.

That's what's generally known as a Portergaff. I used to work with a bird who always drank it at the pub of a lunchtime and after work.

Used to be funny hearing this woman half-pissed trying to utter her mantra...

Potofportergaff please. With each subsequent portergaff she became more tongue-tied and a little more everything else untied. Think a lot of the blokes used to ply her with the stuff in the hope of her falling over on her back with her legs in the air. ;)

Warren -

Warren I never knew that , I checked it in the 'Blackrock Beer Buffs bible' and alas you are a wealth of information

http://blackrock.co.nz/the+beer+buffs+bible.htm

Portergaff
...is a drink once quite popular in New Zealand, a mixture of stout and lemonade or stout and a dash of raspberry.
