I know I have alluded to this on another thread, but I think it merits broader circulation (unlike some other jokes around the place).

I acquired some brand new Coopers Pale Ale longnecks yesterday and was quietly impressed by the changes.

The new bottles have gone retro, returning to the bygone days of the old crown seal. Not only that, but they are more substantial than the screw tops they replace.

The screw tops wighed in at a paltry 417g each, empty weight. The new crown seals are an impressive 567g each (the same weight as the long lamented pick axe longnecks).

The bottles are also quite elegant, slightly taller than the old pick axe, with a slimmer body shape and a more pronounced shoulder and neck line.

They strike me as the ideal modern homebrew bottle, and a will be a hell of a lot easier to find than old pickaxes.

Apparently there is a stubbie redesign afoot too, which may follow suit.

Just another reason to hope the Lion Nathan bid fails, not only will they destroy the contents, the packaging would surely be at risk also.

I just dumped a heap of pick axe brown in my bin are they worth anything

yep a home brewers delight and hard to get

I was wondering when these new bottles would come out. Unfortunately I already have more than enough bottles, including king browns, but I reckon a few still won't go astray.

Are Coopers using these same new bottles for Sparkling Ale?

This is good to see.
I have plenty of bottles but its good to know that there will be more out there.
I reckon its a very smart move by Coopers.

Do Coopers sell cartons of long necks?? A brewer friend of mine was lamenting about how long necks would be better than stubbies (for obvious reasons) and that buying a carton of long necks to drink would be better because of the advantages after (and the fact I drink at least two stubbies in one sitting anyway). Would the new long necks be used in these cartons?

of course they do. how do you think they get them to the shops? individually wrapped??? haha
it comes out more expensive than a carton of stubbies, but i guess its worth paying for the bottles.
cheers!

Please tell me they're going back to the trad. hand-grenade and ring pull? Ah, the memories (of a far better beer).

No ring pull just a heavier weight crown seal bottle. I don't know when the stubbie will be released but I saw it at the brewery a couple of months ago.

A few friends of mine just started out brewing. Needing bottles after making up their first kit, we decided we needed to get bottles. As they are a fan of a coopers pale ale, we got a case of long necks. Basically you are buying a nice beer (IMHO) and getting free quality bottles and free quality yeast. I even started a culture for their next batch.

Funny thing is, I invited them over to see how I clean/sanitise/sterilise my bottles. I also keg. When they saw the option of putting most of the brew into a keg over cleaning 30 longnecks, they went and paid for a new keg system!

So, if the new bottles are heavier, and taking into account the price of fuel, is the price going to increase?

Hmmmmm? Hope not.

Weizguy,
I'd say you are probably right there. What hasn't increased in price lately?

Still a good idea by Coopers though.

Maybe this is an attempt to capture the home brewer market? Entice us to buy more Coopers by putting it in homebrew friendly bottles.

I'll have to watch out for them. I'm quite fond of Coopers beers.

Anyone seen these bottles in Brisbane yet?

Do they still hold 750ml? - Their not downsizing to 690ml like the old 375 to 330ml stubbie trick.........

Asher for now

Given that the megaswilleries have all moved to 800ml, I'd be disappointed if Coopers reduced their volume.

It's payday today for this Government employee.
Might have to track down some Coopers in these bottles, for old times sake. :D

you're getting ripped off $1 Stu!
look harder and find 3 for $10 :)

3 Coopers longnecks for $10  Bargain :beerbang: Costs almost $5 for one as a general rule here in Newcastle :( Thanks for the heads up on the new bottles. I'll be keeping my eye out for a few.

Shawn.
