Just finished my 2nd AG and just curious to hear if anyone has a smart way of removing spent grain from their mash tun.

I am using a 44L esky with ss braid hose for filtration.

I assume probably the simplest way is to buy a decent hand spade from the hardware...however open to suggestions...

Cheers

If you have the space (and inclination) a compost bin is a great place to upturn the tun over in a single dump. Your garden will love you for it ! Alternately a wheelie bin plastic bag slipped over (if the lid comes off) then roll over and gently lift esky.

I concur with Doogie, I used to hate digging out the spent grains. Now all I do is double bag over the top of the MT and then tip into bin and then tie off bag. Its that easy. Although I do like the idea of a compost bin.

Cheers,

JJ

Yeap just pick it up and tip it out
I'll leave the safety addvice for our resident safety officers, but even after a brew with 15kg of grain in it I can still lift my Keg tun and dump it out.

Alcohol fueled brewtality.

I bail the spent grain from the mashtun with a large enameled cup as a scoop. The residue is rinsed out using a watering can after removing the false bottom.

If you have any sort of garden, spent grain is a good additive on the beds. Just watch that it isn't in thick layers, or it sends off strong lactic aromas.

We keep our garbo bins in a line.
I put the mash tun on top of the recycling bin, open the green bin, tip over and up emptying into the green bin. A quick spray with the hose and all is in.
A couple of holes in the bottom of the green bin lets the excess liquid run out.
Just put the green bin out tonight. Weights a ton (well at least 18kg of grain in it from two brew sessions) plus green waste anyway.

I dig a hole in my vege garden and upturn the mash tun into the hole then cover over with dirt, I like to bury it because spent grains can really stink when they start to rot down.

Cheers

i use a little 1 liter plastic bucket to scoop it out.

10 to 15 KG's out in 1 min

easy

ditto to that, except i use a jug. 1L plastic measuring jug makes a great scooper.

Just tip it forward and scrape it into the bin then hose it out.
Dead easy.

Tip it on the garden, then, depending on if the missus is watching...
a) dig it in nicely with a spade, being careful of the reticulation
B) scatter it with a high pressure hose burst
c) slink quietly in the opposite direction

Looks like an excellent setup.

Do you have more pics?

:)

My 3kg part mashes go into the worm farm. Sometimes I'll put a few scoops into the dogs' dinners.

Yeah doesn't the dog love it. :D

You'd think with final runnings around 2 plato it wouldn't be that sweet but as soon as I put it on the compost heap the dog is up there licking away (at the spent grain).

Cheers, Andrew.

Jesus! What a BS thread!

All that said I'll bite... I just toss the hot steaming mess of 8kg of spent grains from my S/S keg mashtun. Quite bloody heavy actually. Carry it down the yard and dump it in the compost bin full o' Cocker Spaniel turds. :beerbang:

What a way to purge away the smells.
