Hello,
I am after some recipe suggestions for a lager with the ingredients listed below. I have only used EKG & goldings hops before & am unsure on their suitability for a lager.

I am open to any White Labs lager yeast to use in this combination.

Currently I have in stock (but don't mind grabbing other suggested ingredients.)

Malt:
JWM Traditional Ale
Caramunich
JWM Pilsener
Wheat
45 ebc Crystal
250 ebc Crystal
40 ebc Amber

Hops:
EKG 5.2%
Challenger 6.6%
Target 10%
N. Brewer 9.5%
NZ Fuggles 4%

I am also open to an Ale recipe suggestion as well, maybe a Bishops finger clone....

Tia,
Phil

I 'think' there was a thread recently about someone thinking of using EKG in a lager.

For a trial:

90 - 95% Pils
5 - 10% Wheat

EKG @ 60min to 30IBU

OG: 1.048

Yeast: WLP800 or S-189.

Ale, well we could be here all night :)

There is nothing wrong with Northern Brewer in lagers either. Maybe use it for bittering only.

Maybe. Never tried it on its own so can't comment on the flavour it imparts by itself. In combo no doubt, but in a lager no room to hide.

Anchor Steam is allegedly bittered, flavoured and aroma'd with it.

Steam beer also has crystal in it, not the plain pils/wheat base I suggested above.

But it is another alternative.

No problem Duff, I was speaking generally, not trying to change your recipe suggestion :)

If I wanted a lager though, personally I would skip the wheat. I would sooner add crystal than wheat to my lagers. I find wheat doesn't help much with clarity, which is important for me in lager style.

And anyway it's verboten! :p

Due to my chiller being dirty (long puppy story) I am currently no chilling a California Common.

85% Weyerman pils
12% Munich
3% Dark crystal
OG 1.050

Northern Brewer 1g/L 30 mins
NB 1.5g/L 10 mins
Cascade 0.5g/L 10 mins
Cascade 1g/L 0 mins
NB bittered to 40 BU

WLP810 California Lager yeast.

EKG? well make sure you boil the bejeezus out of them as their flavour profile do not fit a lager (ie do not use them for flavour or aroma unless you foot and arse flavours in a lager)

cheers

Darren

Thanks for the fast replies.

I guess I was after something easy for my first real Lager & the recipes above give me a good start.
Searching the Recipe index, there wasn't that many Lagers with my range of hops & my limited knowledge on these varieties.

Promash will get a run when I punch the ingredients in, which should help me sort out the IBU's.

Thanks again,
Phil

hey fellas. I have the below AG ingredients left over and would like to pump out another pilsner/lager type brew before the winter runs out.

Any suggestions on what I could knock up with the below?

1.130kg pale crystal
550gm dark Munich
300gm roasted barley
320 choc malt
I also have a sack of BB Ale malt.

65gms German spalt
55gms hallertau

50gms horizon
POR (crap load of em)

Wyeast czech pilsner 2278
Dried swiss lager

...thoughts, ideas?

Pils malt, choc malt, Munich malt, Pilsener-type yeast, Noble hops:

I'm thinking Schwarzbier.

Devo,

Have a look at these threads for some ideas:
Style of the week - Schwarzbier
My second Schwarzbier recipe idea

My next Schwarzbier will be hopefully a ruby-black colour like this:

I haven't worked out the secret yet though...
