hi guys, i have a recipe i have been using and it's been great! now my mate wants to try it for himself, the problem is he only does double batches

so i was just wondering is ok to just double everything? or should i adjust some things?

also he only brews lights so if i just half the sugar will this be ok

recipe is a toucan

2 cans of cheap farmland (or similar) goo
500g dex
10g cascade @7mins
10g amarillo @2mins
10g amarillo 4 days into fermentation
US-05 yeast
make upto 23ltrs
ferment at 18deg

if i double everything (but leave the dex the same) will this turn out the same but with lower alc%

Doubling will be fine! What alc/vol did you get from your original recipe?

I would suggest leaving the dextrose out entirely for a mid-strength.

sorry i must confess i've worked out the alc content, i just take a hyro reading at the end to make sure it's finished then bottle a week later, it's strong though, would have to be over 5% i'd guess

so if he adds the 500grams of dex would this make it full strength?, because he prefers light beer, sounds like leaving the dex out is the best option

Yep...dex = GORNE!! :)

Take a hydro reading when ur mate does it...(minus all dex) then take a hydro reading next time u make it at full strength. that way u'll know once you get the FG readings when the brews are done.

If yours is 5% & he wants a light beer (2.5%) wouldn't you just halve all of the fermentables? You could leave the hops the same but only use 1 can & 250g dex to 46L to get a beer that's half the percentage of yours.

Make it to 92L with the original fermentables if it needs to be a toucan light beer.

Hi, I get your Alc at about 5.9% as per the recipe, and about 4.9% without the dex.
If your mate does double batches, then at 46 litres he will need 3 kits of goo and lose the dex to get 3.7%.
If he wants to use 4 kits of goo at 46l, then he will get around 4.9%.

removing the dex will result in a lower abv reading, but will also noticiably effect the final flavour and mouthfeel of the beer.
try to stick to your proportions (or ratios) to replicate the beer

thanks for you calcs bubba, i reckon your pretty right about the %5.9, it's pretty powerfull stuff :beerbang:

i agree about not changing it too much, i think what'll i'll tell him to do is leave out the dex and make it upto 50 ltrs (instead of 46ltrs)
