The CT was recommended to me by Ange, from the Taphouse.I remember it's rep from many, many many years ago,not a pub to visit without carrying a gun  Aaah, the good old days, when we weren't good ,or old :D

If you want an adventure, catch a train on the lillydale line to lillydale. then get the bus that heads to healesville. jump off the bus at coldstream and have a few at coldstream brewery. get back on the bus and head to healsville. have a few at white rabbit and bukleys. head to yarra glen and have a few at heargreave hills, then head for home. the train ride from the city will take you over an hour, the trip from lillydale out im not sure, but its a scenic drive. half hour by car for me in croydon, 10 minutes from lillydale. heaps of winery options on the route too, and many foodie options. uncle google will help you out but heres the local heasville busline:

All seems to be covered here. When I was there last year I was most spell-bounded by Mrs Parma's
Fantastic food and good variety

yep. buckleys have been making beer up there for a long time. off the shelf in a random shop ive had some truely dreadful beer from them, but ive had just as many decent bottles and the brewery visit i made was very friendly and the beer from the bar brilliant. perhaps they have some handeling or consistancy issues, i dont know. I will also be the first to confess my beer ignorance relative to many on this forum. but for someone interested in local beers, for me buckleys is a must stop for melbourne microbrew.

While this is an interesting idea, given all the pubs/micros within easy public transport travel from the middle of Melb, its not worth the effort.
If you visit the places listed earlier in the thread, you'll have more than a fair share of good local craft beer.

I'm no expert either, but if Buckleys cannot bring something I'm able to drink to the Microbrewery show case at Fed Square (where they should have their very best on display) it's not something I'll consider. No doubt the owner/brewer guy was nice/friendly, and their eco-concepts are cool, but in the end it's really about the beer.

guys...

Just got back from Melbourne yesterday and I have to admit it was one of the nicest holiday ever! You folks in Victoria have it good. Sadly however, I only managed to visit 1 pub from the above mention list.

Attached are some images taken from my phone on a Thursday night promotion where you only pay AUD5 to enter and AUD5 for beers.

Aha - the Biero bar, one of my favourites! It really is a good pub and very friendly.

As its a bit off the beaten track i always find it to be fairly quiet as well.

Just noticed this, if there is anyone who does fancy a pub crawl around Melbourne I would certainly be up for it.

I have only been here a short time (originally from England) but have knowledge of few places but always want to hear about more!

crap... I too just noticed that. I was rushing work out of the way so I can enjoy Melb and didnt checked in here for a long time. I believe I should be back there fairly soon and I'll take you guys up on it.

I saw this brochure in the hotel lobby on pub tours - http://www.melbourneunderground.com.au/ maybe we should seriously get together and run a similar thing.

on the same note, I have to admit that pubs in England is still my fav in terms of ambiance

Went to Penny Blue the other day. WHAT A STOCKED BEER LIST! Pretty reasonable prices too, cheaper than the LC Dining Hall. Biero is rad and The Local Taphouse is a lovely place to spend a night.

Hit up Mrs Parmas the night before Penny Blue and found the list a little restrictive. There are some great Vic micros but it's nice to have more choice...for the record, Mornington's Pale Ale is VERY like S&W Pacific Ale, almost a clone!
