Hi Wes,
thanks for the tip.
I had a hat with jayse about this a while back now and he talked me through it as much as possible re the information available on the Powells website.

eg here is their "Typical analysis" for ale malt.
Typical analysis
Moisture Content Extract Colour Kolbach Index D.P.

<3.5% >81% 4.0 6.0 42 - 46 160 - 200

Here is what I have entered into beersmith file.
Name: Powells Ale Malt (Powells Malt)
Type: Grain
Origin: Australia
Supplier: Powells Malt

Yield: 81.0 %
Potential: 1.037
Color: 5.0 EBC
Max in Batch: 100.0 %
Moisture: 3.5 %
Protein: 11.7 %
Coarse Fine Difference: 1.5 %
Diastatic Power: 120.0 %

and so on etc for the other malts. admittedly I only enetered the Yeild ,Potentiasl and color and moisture, nothing else.

any more tips would be apprecitaed but I can understand it may be hard without anybody seeing a Certificate of Analysis.
Hopefully this will get sorted as soon as possible seeing a lot of people are using their malts these days.

The specs as sent to me by Powells are posted earlier back in this thread

Well the specs I am using are off their website. Is there a difference?

Guys
I have an answer from Powells re-grain specs

If someone a bit more computer literate puts this into Beersmith I would appreciate a copy to import

Cheers

Batz. Reading the thread I feel that there are others who need a bit of help on how to enter the details in BeersSmith or Promash. I held back on this until now as I was hoping that some other more aptly qualified than I would answer. In any case, this is how I entered the grain properties in my BeerSmith and Promash. As I have no idea what programs you guys are running I attached a text file which can be read universally.

Hope it helps some.

Johnno, the figures in that text file are not correct. The only thing that changes from type to type is the colour in your file. You need to get the other parameters from Powells. BTW, I have only ever seen a broad spec from Powells - never a Certificate of Analysis.

Wes,
Yes my Coarse Fine Difference and Diastatic Power entries are all the same as I haven not adjusted those.
All the other info is from the specs on their site.
Looks ok to me. I have just tried to average it out. Never having seen an analysis sheet from them and due to the changing seasons and crop conditions each year etc etc I think I will leave it at that for now unless there are glaring mistakes to which I then stand to be corrected.

Unfortunately Powells have not supplied the extract potential ie 1.037 or 1.039 and this is one of the most important pieces of information required in beersmith or Promash.

I know that we can guestimate by taking the EP from other manufacturers for similar grains, but one or two points difference in a base malt can add up to a lot for a 4-5 kilo grist.

I have emailed powells but have received no responce for this info.

Andrew. Grant Powells stated in an email to me that they have no data on extract potential. However, I noted that when I completed all the boxes in BeerSmith with the other info supplied, the extract potential was worked out by BeerSmith and automatically filled in for me. See my attached txt file I posted a few minutes ago.

Guys, both Beersmith and Promash will automatically calculate the extract potential from the Extract %. I will lay out the table of specs that Powells supplied to Batz so that it make some real sense - will post tomorrow.

Unfortunately this lack of info from Powells is now becoming legend. And even then you cant rely on the accuracy - I had some independent analysis done on their malts last year and the stats were miles away from what they claimed.

A real shame.

Wes

This is slightly off topic. But Doc has kindly given me this link Here to help those of us who use Promash to add the Maltcraft database to our software. I can only add that I hope that Powells will add their grain database to both Promash & /Beertools in the near future.
