This morning I keep getting a new window opening in Firefox basically trying to get me to buy anti virus .. classic scareware stuff

Your computer may be infected... do you have virus protection.. click here

Its only on AHB that I can see so far, although I will give my PC a thorough scan - just thought the mods might need a heads up in case its an issue with the AHB site/server

I'd get your computer checked. Could be that you've aquired Virtumonde or the Vundo virus. Tends to promote popups like that.

Reason why it's happening on AHB is it's most likely monitoring your frequent web surfing habits.

I'm sure the IT types can elaborate more than I can. However it's my guess.

If it's Virtumonde have it removed because it will only get worse. <_<

Best thing to do is to copy text from the popup window down word-for-word and google it in " "s.

tis OK - I shall scan the crapola out of my PC and fix it up if its a local issue - I just wanted to flag it fast if it was an AHB issue so that the mods etc could get a handle on it.

Sounds like its just me.. so off line I head and a PC cleaning we will go

Make sure you update your software first! :)

I had this a week or so ago, needed to have it removed professionally. It soon became a real headache,it would not allow me to update any anti-virus software or even download MS repair stuff.Ad-ware etc would not work either.
I am sure AHB is not your culprit

if its still happening try this for me, goto malwarebytes.org and d/l their anitmalware program (it's only a couple of meg)
and run a quick scan, that should only take a couple of minutes and see hwo you go from there,

Rob.

I used malwarebytes and the one month trial of kaspersky and it worked a treat. Make sure you treat any thumb drives you may use, as some of the recent trojans auto-install onto these and auto-run whenever they are inserted into a 'puter.

..and all usability, compatibility with hardware and software, gaming etc.

Ironic, that must be a newby. A good freind here clicked on said pop up (two days ago) and aparantely his computer then went tits up. Clickers beware... Touch wood my security suite is up to date.

you need to get Spybot S&D, freeware: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
you then need a decent anti-virus program: try Avast, it's free. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

what you have is spyware/ad-ware, a quick update and blast with Spybot will kill it. Then change browsers to Mozilla Firefox, you'll never get popups or advertisements on any website again. (to disable 90% of ads on any website, install the plugin called Ad-Block Plus)

I never see ads, on basically any site I visit.

if you need a hand and are close by to me, I can fix it up for you without having to pay stupid prices to 'professionals' who basically do the same thing, I will only charge a schooner of your finest :D

Not if it's the same as I had,Spybot,Ad-Ware etc didn't touch it.

if you hit it with NOD32, you'll basically wipe anything (spyware, virii, adware, trojans, etc) . If you need the program, pm me and i'll send it to you.

# NOD32 was certified by ICSA Labs.[9]
# It has been tested 52 times by Virus Bulletin and has failed twice and passed 50 times, with a success rate of over 96%,[10] the highest pass rate of the tested anti-virus products.[11]
# At CNet.com it has received a score of 3.5/5 by editors and 4/5 by over 15 user votes. [12]
# At Download.com (owned by CNet) it has received a score of 5/5 by editors and 4/5 by 500+ user votes.[13]
# 94.4% Malware Detection and 94.7% spyware detection in the latest AV-Test comparative [14]
# 93% Detection on Set A and 96.6% Detection on Set B with most aggressive settings in the latest Av-Comparatives Test[15]

you'll never pay anyone again, that's for sure.

I had this virus some time ago and found this site:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic153980.html

A helpful young chap/lass from their bedroom in Belgium with a penchant for Death Metal led me through a step by step process to elimate said virus over a couple of days and voila gone before you could say I'll have another Duvel please! :D

Cheers,

SJ

Yep same thing happened to me about 6 months ago even though I had Norton installed (which I know now is shite). Removed Norton and installed CA Anti virus / spyware suite and all good. (Cost $50 from the local PC shop)

It happened when I clicked on something I shouldn't have... and no nothing to do with beer.. just something else blokes love.. ;)

I'll be honest, CA is rubbish too. Better than Norton, but not fantastic. Seriously, if you switch browsers you'll have no issues browsing porn sites. Most of the attacks are based on IE exploits.

Opera or Mozilla Firefox (www.getfirefox.com)

you won't look back :)

it makes me kinda frustrated, people every day tell me 'oh i just had to get a pro to clean my computer', when all the problem is, is a virus/spyware/adware etc. It's really not worth taking your PC to a 'pro' if you have any dramas with it, if anyone here has PC troubles drop me a PM and I'll advise on how to get it fixed straight away.
