Woohoo! I just won a bid for a 30gig Mp3 player off ebay. Finally I can carry my music collection around with me.

The question is, I hear of these podcasts of brewers.
They may go over my head, therefore making me turn back to Tool or Muse, or whatever, but then again I might learn something.

Not sure of where to find them.
Can anyone give me sites to look for them?

Thanks,
Pete

Jump onto iTunes and do a search for beer or brewing. If you don't like itunes try http://www.podcastalley.com or http://www.odeo.com .

I personally normally listen to the brewing network guys, gls occasionally and other than that mostly tech and science podcasts.

you can grab podcats directly from www.thebrewingnetwork.com

www.basicbrewing.com and www.brewcrazy.com are two of my favorite ones.

I don't have an iPod, MP3, video mobile, private helicopter, etc.

Are podcasts really worth it? Have those who listen to these shows found a difference in the beer they make compared to the beer they used to make?

Just curious.

Cheers.

The Brewing Network is highly entertaining, but for pure beer information from a top notch homebrewer (multiple winner of Sierra Nevada Homebrewer of the Year), and to get great tips on how to brew to style from a certified BJCP judge, you must listen The Jamil Show from - you guessed it - The Brewing Network. Go thee to wwww.thebrewingnetwork.com and download the archive of The Jamil Show for every style that interests you. Unmissable.

I listen to them on work's laptop on the train (I have an 80 min trip each way to/from work) while playing video games or *cough* working. I don't think my brewing is any better as a result, but it does give me ideas, such as the recent John Palmer interview on Basic Brewing where he talks about pH and water in general. I checked my pH as a result and found it was within the proscribed ranges.

It's not only about making better beer, as these forums, the US forums, hundreds of websites, books, etc have all the information you need to make good beer. I just find that listening to others talking about beer and brewing to be as relaxing as listening to music, maybe moreso. Sure beats drivetime radio, anyway.

Fair enough. I know petesbrew personally as a fellow member of the Hills Brewers Guild and I've tried some of his beers which are very enjoyable, so am not questioning his desire or want to listen to these shows.

I know if I had an iPod, etc. and SWMBO caught me downloading/listening to brewing shows, I'd get even further shakes of the head

Cheers.

SWMBO here is just over the whole thing. She just rang me from a friend's place to tell me she and the kids were staying out for tea, so I told her my partygyle plans. Not even a flinch, just a "that's nice dear". Listening to brewing podcasts is just a tiny bit of the whole obsession. Think about the guys that ~record~ them! Now there's obsession!

i like basicbrewing because it's informative, doesn't have the most irritating intro music in the world and is easy to get through.
i have recently been putting video podcasts on my phone so I can watch them in between work on in the car. brew porn on the phone is cool.
sure does beat drive-time PoMo.

Really at the end of the day reading beats audio or video. You can get the information you want at the rate you want. Unfortunately I can't read while I drive so podcasts are a good alternative. Makes use of that dead time. I guess we all just feel time poor now days.

No need for an ipod, they will play on your PC, give them ago when you have nothing better to do

This sounds great, only other question I can think of though... Is this stuff out-of-the-question for those of us stuck on a dial-up connection?
How big are the files on average?

Cheers,
Simo

The Brewing Network podcasts are on average 85Mb, and Basic Brewing around 12Mb.

All bar about three of the podcasts I listen to are brewing related. Rather than improve my beers, they give me ideas, inspiration and information about some of the more technical parts of the process.

Beers,
Doc

Feel free to question away, Duff!
i know if Shaz found out that the first download for my player was an mp3 of brewing, she'd call me a hopeless nerded out beer nerd... I'll have to make the first download some punk, metal or some porn (yeah its a video version), that way I'd prove i'm still slightly normal.

Cheers Doc, the Basic Brewing ones could be a goer, will only take 1/2 an hour to get them :D
