Perforated Ss Mesh For Mash Tun

Has anyone tried to source perforated SS mesh to produced a raised false bottom for a Mash tun?

Any recommendations to try in Sydney / costs and sheet sizes???

Metal Mesh is probably your best bet to try in Sydney.
I'm not sure on cost though when ordering on our small HB scale requirements.

You dont need more than 30% open area if you are using a floating mash.

I manage in a manufacturing workshop and to buy this sort of thing you need to buy the sheet, however you might try to ringing or better still go around and see if any workshops have any off cuts this would be the most cost affect approach and it is the season of giving

///, 30% is WAY WAY too much - you will need a very course crush to stop it all falling through. Consider that most Euro breweries go with 10 to 12% and 0.5mm slots and English ale breweries around 15% with 0.6 to 0.8mm wedgewire. Go for 15% max open area and you should be able to source some 0.7mm thick perforated stainless sheet with 0.5mm holes on a 2mm pitch in Wollongong. Last lot I got was from a sheet metal shop - just off the main drag heading for the port area.

Try programming that into your GPS SatNAv.........

316 can be MIG'd, TIG'd, stick, spotted and oxy'd (with a proper flux). Termimesh can be done it just needs a bit more finesse than sheet.

For spot welding the standard copper points are fine as long as they are clean and in good shape.

My thoughts are that Termimesh is too fine for most HB needs. Clogs real easily, especially in the boil.

Spot welding does not need electrodes it relies on the electrical current between the to copper ends. I make a Hopp sieve for my boiler and i roll s/s mesh and then spot weld it together works fine.

Frank, if you go to Armstrong Steam in Capalaba they have all kinds of SS mesh maybe even got some off cuts for you to experement with. I got some a couple months ago but havent used it yet if you want to get some from me. I dont know how fine the holes are but they are pretty fine.

The other day I was at a friends house and opened the screen door, it is made from securimesh, you know the stuff. An apparition appeared " a new mash tun seive". What do you all think about using this stuff, would it work, should be readily available.

Too much "open area" would be my first thought and then who can you buy it off ? It's a company specific product (I thought), who else flogs it ??

There are a couple of crowds which I have got s/s mesh from, many different wire thickness and hole size....

well worth a call - but I think they generally sell the same products. I have a catalogue from metalmesh at work, and there is a massive list of screen sizes which would seem to be suitable for some part of the brewing process.

I bought this SS mesh strainer from Ikea for about $10 and I always thought one day I would use this in my mash tun. Thought of cutting out the flat part (bottom of strainer) which is about 20cm in diameter.
