Just racked a sierra nevada pale ale clone to secondary. Unfortunatley made a right dogs breakfast of the siphon/transfer and lost 5L :(
I have approx 15l in a 23l demijon, with a thick layer of hops on the surface. The airlock is bubbling every min or so and a lot of co2 was released when siphoned, (not air just a lot of co2 being released).
What do you think of the oxidation risk? Should i try and bottle a touch early or dowe think there should be sufficent co2 in the airspace?

It's still producing C02, it'll be right, don't worry about it.

Have a think about not using a secondary on your next one, if it is an ale. Giv e it 2 weeks on the primary and chill it for the last couple of days to drop out all the yeast. You'll still get a really clear beer and you'll avoid any oxidation/contamination problems.

i will give that a try, thanks.
i thought every brew, be it ale or lager benefits from a stay in a secondary. obviously an efficent and sanitary transfer is essential, which i managed to botch on the efficient part!
also my ale is hopped in secondary. anybody tried dry hopping the primary?

Not every brew needs to go to secondary, hopmonkey. It really depends on the type of beer, yeast etc. Have a look at this thread from a couple of months ago. I have not been using a secondary with my ales with good results in clarity. Just let the beer sit in primary for a couple of weeks and be careful not to disturb the yeast when transferring when bottling. Just easier not to transfer.

Dry hopping in the primary is fine, just wait until fermentation has finished and then chuck them in.

Not doing a secondary has advantages, no change of oxidation or introduction of infection. Wait until a few more brews and when you feel you have your sanitation procedure down pat give it another try.

Check out this thread for more info on secondary.

Your advice is also pretty good - LOL :D
