Hi guys,

Just after a bit of advice, I have just started my first brew. I decided to brew a stout, a coopers one to be exace, and I set it up right and everything was going peachy til a cold night, dad went up turned the heater belt on, and it got all the way up to 38 degrees.

I've tested the gravity and it is sitting just below the beer mark on 1011, just wondering what yous thought, weather it will still be ok or not. Cheers guys.
 
You stout will more than likely still be ok........tasting it down the track will be the final decider. What were the ingredients you used and how long has it been fermenting for? And how long has it been sitting on 1011 so far?
 
How far into the fermentation was the heat turned up? If it was towards the end (say after 4 or 5 days) then probably not much harm done. With the stout in particular the flavour is so strong that it can hide a lot of off flavours that would be unacceptable in a lager or lighter beer. If it was towards the beginning and the yeast got really stressed out you might notice a twang of fusel oils and stuff that tastes like nail polish remover in the finished beer. Should still be drinkable IMHO. Bottle it and see I reckon, after the gravity has been stable for a couple of days.
 
I bottled a Coopers stout last month it stopped about 1010...i think

i dont have my brew book here to check as i bottled a real ale at the same time but one was 1009 and the other 1010

what was the Starting Gravity?

I used the guiness kit, and a kilo of dextrose with some malt mixed in with it., and not sure what the starting gravity was sorry.

Also that happened about 2 days in so quite early. Ill bottle him up and give him a go.
 
If it tastes like crap we know who'll be drinking it. :)
Hide the heater belt, or cut off Dads hand too.

Not much you can do now

Make sure your Dad gets to taste some ....especially if it is horrid

You are lucky it was a stout - It _may_ hide most of the off flavours the stressed yeast has thrown up!!
What yeast was it - Coppers is pretty tolerant to high temps (but not that high)

Keep it under 25C in future - 18-20 is best for most Ales
