A quick post on my first AG experience.

Firstly - a big thanks for all the help advice and info from the group - very much appreciated.

Decided that the first AG would be Jayse's Skunk Fart Ale (because of all the great reviews it received - thanks Doc for posting the receipe) ..ended up collecting 17L (OG 1.050) - I think my sparge was slightly light on although at the time I actually think the pre-boil volume was too high (around 3 somthing litres) and the gavity reading of the run off using the refractometer was getting too low. <_<

Changes i will be making include getting a much longer ladle for the boil, add a sight gauge on the boiler, consider a brew stand and some minor plumbing changes.

thanks again lads...as far as I am concerned game on .. :beerbang:

kind regards

MWS

Hi MWS and congrats on your first AG. A couple of words on the boiler - sight glasses can be very dangerous on a boiler - why not get yourself a stainless steel ladel (BIG wok spoon from the Chinese supermarket) and put some notches on the handle to mark off your boil volumes.

What gravity reading did you stop the runoff at?

Well done, welcome to the limbo of All Grain. You'll learn something every batch to help you out along the way, and the rewards are awesome beer!

Enjoy

Gidday markws,

You and me both mate on the first AG, how good was the aroma coming from the mash tun and then the kettle.

Good luck with it mate, we will have to compare the product when it's drinking time.

Cheers
Tim

thanks for the comments lads.

Fair comments regarding a site gauge on the boiler.

Info on my effort for jayse' skunk fart ale .....

I batched sparged - the first runnings were around ~22 brix, second runnings ~3.5 brix - post boil - ~12.5 brix OG of 1.050 when I added the yeast.

As mentioned pre-boil ~33L post boil - 17 L decanted for ferementation with around 4 Litres loss in evapouration...To be honest I was expecting the evapouration to be higher with the comments from a recent thread this week covering this topic.

I am sure there was another 2 to 5 litres left in the mash tun however when a saw the second runnings measured around 3.5 - I thought it was appropriate to stop esp since I had been sparging for around 60 mins.

I was surprised to see when decanting the post boil wort the oily resin material/solution appear on top of the wort from the hops...(thanks again for the hops Ross..)

Cheers

MarkWS
