I was there in 2001 and although i enjoyed it i wouldn't bother again. Munich has so much to offer without beer-fest. Walking the streets and dropping into the real bier hall/gardens will give you much more! Of course it cant hurt to vist beerfest for half a day, as everyone has alluded the hofbrauhaus has to be seen to be believed.. the "pig pen" is down-right wrong, full of half naked aussie idiots. it is nearly embarrasing, but everyone is drunk and having a good time so no-one really notices. Grab a sausage and a beer, check it all out... then get into the real Munich would be my suggestion.
