Hey everyone,
I am fairly new to brewing and wanted to see what people thought of this recipe, I was aiming for something that with ageing would taste like a european lager hence the choice of hops. I bottled this batch recently and as with my first batch using glass bottles and extra ingredients (hops/grain) I have found a residue built up on the bottom of the bottles resembling the yeast cake in the fermenter. Didn't get a similar thing in my first couple of batches using plastic bottles just wondering if these have been bottled too early? or is this sedement normal?

Ingredients:
1 Can Brewcraft Munich Lager
1kg Dextrose
500g LDM
100g lager/pilsener malt steeped 30mins
20g Saaz hops @ 30min
10g Saaz hops @ 10min
20g Hallertau @ 10min

It was only bottled last week so haven't tried it yet, the beer is currently so thick you can't see through the bottle, is this normal with stronger beers? (didn't add finings) and would this affect the taste of the beer?

What yeast and what was the brewing process (yeast pitching temp, ferment temp, ferment time etc)?

Some yeast residue/sediment is normal (although my limited experience of lagers if brewed at correct temps and properly rested and lagered in secondary suggests lagers have little to none).

Generally the yeast will settle out - just don't pour out the last 3o mL or so.

leave it the required time, drink it and see where your improvements are for your next batch.
 
Please post your tasting notes, because Ive got one of these kits that I'll get around to in a month or so. Seems like an awful large hop addition to an already hopped kit. I also was told that the supplied yest (if you used it) isnt a lager yeast, so if you used it and brewed under lager conditions, then it might not be finished. But I hope you took gravity readings, that will gve you your answer. Post your OG & FG here and we'll take a look. Thats really the ONLY way to tell if your beer has stopped fermenting.

Not at all. Saaz and Hal added at 10 minutes will only contribute to aroma, and the 30@30 saaz is such a small amount of AAs that for 30 minutes it wont do a lot except add character.

As for the sediment.. it tends to hide in the bumpy bottoms of PET bottles.
You probably could try racking your lagers and .. ahem.. lagering them for a few weeks with some gelatine before bottling if it is really freaking you out.

Sorry forgot about those, I used a Lager Yeast - SAFLAGER S-23, pitched at 20 degrees, fermented at 18-20 degrees (I realise lower temps are better) and fermented 8 days primary.

I have a dodgy hydrometer which won't take readings above 1042 (i'll be getting a new one shortly) so I can't be sure of how alcoholic this brew will be but it maintained a FG of 1011 for over 2 days so I thought it would be ready for bottling.

I tried this one and really enjoyed it:

Munich Helles

Munton's premium lager kit 1.5kgs
1kg LDM
500g Dextrose
10g Mt Hood Hops

*I might try Saaz with the Mt Hoods next time I make this recipe.
Was trying to get something similar to Hofbrauhaus Original.
