The motor is only 3/4 HP geared down 15:1 to 93 RPM @ 46Nm. I would have thought that to be a little overkill but not that bad.

What if I make the coupling the weakest link just to be sure? I'll confirm this by running some tests with browndogs coathanger method :lol: .

Without running the actual calcs, I'm going to say that the key on the mill will shear a long time before you manage to put 46Nm thru it, so yeah...little bit of overkill. You look at the gearmotor being built to slip over a 25mm shaft and you're connecting it to a 12.7mm shaft, yeah.... little bit of overkill.

Having said that... I'd have probably done the same given the oppurtunity.
 
Next mill I buy will be powered by the pto on my tractor. :lol: Greg
46nm dosent seem enough for that reduction box
