One wonders whether or not something like this would do the job:

Yes they will. But one is DC and without a proper power supply (meaning rather expensive) it won't.
The 2 hp one will do it for sure, but is a bit of over kill

But if the price is right go for it. Shipping from Melbourne will be a bit.
I just bought one of these in a 3 hp for my table saw. Works great, but is big! My motor was 50 bucks to ship.
I think i got the motor for mine at a garage sale. I buy motors all the time if the price is right.
Cheers,
Bud

It's hard to find a 1/2 or even a 1/3 HP motor.

Never know, might find another motor on the scrap pile tomorrow.

Replying to your own post is so wrong, but the scrap pile gave up the following:

220V motor, running at 1400rpm, with a gearbox geared down to 100RPM.

It's a 1 inch square shaft that I now have to connect somehow to the 12mm circular shaft on the Mill. My current spider coupler wont do it, so it's off to find another big enough for the job.

Thanks Rob, will try them tomorrow and see what they can help me out with.

Mate,

Looks to me like the motor was on a pump. It says that on the left side. But only 6 litre per hour, 10 bar pressure.

On the right side it says .08 horse power .06 kilowatts. that is under one tenth of a horse power. Not much.
Looks to be 1400 rpm. To slow it down you will need a 50 mm drive pulley to a 250mm pulley on the grinder which will give you 280 RPM, which may be a bit fast. To get to 140 RPM you would need a 500mm pulley on the grinder.

I am driving a Marge mill with a 1/3 hp motor, 1400RPM, 50mm to 350mm pulleys so going about 200 RPM.

I am not too sure that small a motor will do the job.

Cheers,
Bud

Hi Bud,

Your setup looks pretty good. Just wondering if there's a name for the whatsyjigger that holds the larger pulley and gives you direct drive for your mill? (top left of your frame)
I reckon that would suit me rather than mounting a pulley directly to the mill and stressing the rig with belt tension.

Hey Mick,

I don't know what it is called either. They are used for grinding wheels or polishing wheels. I think it is an old type used instead of wheels directly on the motor shaft. It is just a housing with ball bearings and has right and left hand threads on it like a bench grinder. I have two of them and found them at garage sales I think.
It is the way to go so as not to put the load on the mill shaft.

Cheers,
Bud
