Hello

I notice a few of you are brewing lower alcohol beers

I have searched and have come up with zip

Could people post there recipes to the recipies section with a link in here or put the recipe in here and i will add it to the recipe section.

Cheers

David

G'day Dave.

I tend to find the darker the better with lower alc. beers. I've got 2 pretty good recipes. I'll post them on the recipe section in the next hour or so.

One's a Dark Mild and the other's a Scottish 70 shilling. Both produced quite nice beers, particularly the Mild. :)

Dave.

Dark Mild is now in the recipe section. :)

Thanks

I have accedently made a few Low % beers in my first couple of brews due to lower than expected efficency, and the darker ones were deffinatly better

Be good to try some that were intended to be that way

Probably zip on "low alcohol"

But if you search on "mild" or "ordinary bitter" there have been heaps of threads discussing the best way to get maximum flavour for minimum alcohol.

Scottish 70 shilling is now posted in recipe section too. ;)

Warren,
Your dark mild is just the sort of thing I have been looking for to try a small AG brew for the first time. I actually have just about everything on your grain bill at home already except the amber malt. Would melanoidan malt be a reasonable substitute for the amber malt. It seems to have a similar colour in Beersmith, so I am hoping it has similar characteristics.

Thanks
BK

Yeah, you'd get away with it with no worries I'd say BK. Go for it.

I'm just a bit Amber malt crazy is all.

Great, thanks for the response Warren.

I have been thinking about just this thing. I want to brew up a light black. Gonna be in a porter style I think.

Haven't settled on the exact recipe I'll use, but when I brew it, possibly tomorrow, I'll post.

The trick with low Alc beers is to lower your bitterness accordingly.

i.e and English mild will only have a bitterness of about 18 IBU for an SG of 1038

Remember this and you can make all your beers under 3% and keep them balanced

Yep, I reckon Stu's right on the money. You wouldn't want any hop monsters at an SG below 1.040.

Just as another aside I've always found that keeping the carbonation on the lower side makes them more drinkable if not very enjoyable too. :beerbang:

Excessive carbonic bite really mutes the more subtle flavours and bodies on smaller beers. If you're bottling I'd suggest priming as low as you dare. This will also ensure they're ready to drink earlier too.

In fact it's very easy to tell if you've got a winner on your hands with a small beer. It's very tempting to drink it straight from the primary fermenter.
