Another one I forgot to mention that has a really great atmosphere and (hopefully still) a really great pint of Ind Coope Burton Bitter is the World's End in Camden.

If you're lucky they've usually got some good tunes blasting away as well. Looks a bit of a hole inside but has atmosphere. :super:

Just a quick stagger form Chalk Farm station.

Too many beers - too little time. Thanks all for input. !!! I need to sit down with a map now and plan the assult.

Kong - I spent a bit of time a few suburbs away from london Fields 10 years ago. A mate was renting a flat near Holloway Prison and I crashed on his foor for a few weeks while I sold my Kombi on Market Road. Seems a bloody long time ago now though. I miss my old Kombi :(

there you go.. i was there in 2001.
funnily enough.. i sold our Bedford "A-Team" van on Market road after we finished our euro tour. :icon_cheers:
i too... miss our van..!!!! although we got back exactly what we paid for it, some 18 months and many tens of thousands Kilometres later... (i also owned a Kombi here in Oz)

Another one to visit for atmosphere is Boogaloo ... i wish it was established when i was there..!
probably not known for its beer selection, but patronage is well known.

ohhh to be there on a night when the most well known regular.. Mr MacGowan, decides to take control (loose term) of the mic....

...and don't forget to hunt down a Walkabout pub, even better if there's a big tri-nations game on ;)
Fosters or Crown Lager - take your pick :icon_vomit:

A vote for the Champion - http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/clubs_bars/venue-1391.php which to my mind is pretty much everything you want in an English pub - lots of different brews to sample and a really good atmosphere

Another I must agree on, but only for the wonderful stained glass windows. The range of brews is only the standard sam smiths stuff, they didn't even have the good ones when I was there (imperial stout etc). If you want to drink a few different english keg lagers all very similar in taste though, it's a good spot

Infact, there is a good pub crawl that Steve (Silktork) took a few of us from ratebeer on one day listed here:

If you're in town on a Sunday head out to Kentish Town(I think) for an afternoon at....

The Church.

A must.

I second the Jeruselum in Clerkenwell, I was there last night enjoying the Mild. This is Stonch's local. From there you can walk around to the Fox and Anchor near smithfields market. they usually have nethergate ales on tap here. i went there last night as well. Also in the Clerkenwell Holborn are are Ye Olde Mitre which is a lovely historic pub in which elements of the front bar date back to 1556. Also the Cittie of York on High Holborn is a gem. Has Sam Smith's beers on tap and IMHO is better than Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese which someone else recommended. On a non ale perspective the is The Rake down near London bridge which has an impressive collection of boutique beers or teh Dovetail Beligian Vafe which is in the Clerkenwell area.
The White Horse on Parsons Green is ok, they have a good beer selection (including Sierra Nevada PA on tap) but the whole pub is full of pretentious types being seen rather than enjoying the beer.
One that is close to your accomodation is Mabel's Tavern, which is a Shepherds Neame pub and Ricky Gervais (The Office, Extras etc) local.

BTW, I was at a few of these places last night. You can read my thoughts at www.thebeerdiary.blogspot.com (totally affiliated as its my blog)

Well it's actually a very early afternoon - you'd best get there at 11am to line up. Been once, very wierd in the fact that the license allows them to sell drinks but not serve them. So you buy tokens and exchange them for a variety of canned goods all provided in a small plastic bag. And then it's all over after a few hours.

There are better things to do than the Church if your time is limited.

I second that your time is better spent anywhere other than the church, but it is a 'cultural' institution. An OK morning for the 20-somethings, even somewhat of an eye opener (what NOT to do, etc. Hehe). Forget about it if you're older than 30 - you should know better.
Most people have mentioned here all the good ones, but let me chime in with an opinion on JD Wetherspoons. Sure they're lowest common denominator themed chain pubs, but they are still a champion of real ale. Often, if it's a good one, you can find rare pint in good nick. Don't discount them at a pinch, just steer clear of the nuked chicken pasta.

I found that very few JDW pubs were that focused on real ale. The lines were often served via the lager chiller, resulting in a serving temp far too cold. Crosse Keys was an exception to that, but they still didn't keep them in wonderful condition.

Thanks guys.

Tim - if you fancy meeting up for a pint or two in a few weeks time, drop me a line. I'll bring the latest Leader paper over so you can catch with all the Shire happenings....

Hi Plastic,
Thanks, but I will be back in aus for a couple of weeks as of Thurs morning as my Bro in Law is getting married, so I can catch up with the Leader then! But def catch up for a beer if i'm around (I should be). Cdbrown may be around as well??
Actually I am looking forward to seeing how my first year Columbus is doing. My old man has been looking after it while I've been away. Apparently there were over 200 cones and now he has propagated 9 additional plants which he is going to take down to his hobby farm in Braidwood. He has been keeping an eye on Rhizomes on ebay and is thinking about growing/making soem extra money!

The White Horse on Parsons Green (Fulham) is a great pub with nice outdoor area and is about 1min walk from the tube station (Parsons Green). They usually have about 5 or 6 boutique beers on tap. The food is good and the outdoor area has just been redone on the odd chance that the sun might shine - oh where is the sun I ask each day :(

Just across the park is called the Duke on the Green which is also nice place for a drink - that's if your out this way.

Try to stay away from the chain pubs like O'Neills and Weatherspoons. There are pubs all over the place so just go out and enjoy as many as you can.

You'll have to PM some details and I might be able to meet up for a cheeky pint or 4.

Cheers
-cdbrown

The White Horse was my local when i was living at Parsons Green. A nice pub indeed on a summer evening.

How suprising I haven't seen the Slug n Lettuce mentioned? If you happen to go there Plastic, please pick me up a Slug Jug. My wife broke mine :(

Tim - what's your secret. My first year colombus is only two bines and no cones. Wasn't expecting any though, so not that dissappointed but your 200 cone haul puts it to shame. My first year "Gymea Bay Golding" was a bit better. I got all of 12 cones off that !!?? Though growth was pretty good so am hoping next season will be much better.

richard

PS - sharkies beat manly on sat night - go you sharkies !!!

The secret is to add couple of handfuls of dynamic lifter once a month and giv ethem a good drenching in water everyday. Mine are in a large pot that will drain excess water, I instructed my Dad to use a whole watering can every morning. After this regime started they just took off - well apparently.
I'm looking forward to picking whats left of the flowers on Thurs morning. And picking up a big stash of Aussie beers!
I'm going to order a couple of rhizomes whyen they are available again. We should tee up and swap some cuttings next growing season (I may be home by then).

Tim - thanks for the tip. Will adopt that next season. Very keen to do a swap so drop us a line when your back next growing season. I've got a columbos and a golding. A mate's also got a cluster growing who's also keen to do some swapping. I'll probably buy a couple more from Rufus later in the year as well. Would like to get a cascade established.
cheers - richard.

The Porterhouse Brewing Company are Irish, however they have a pub behind Walkabout in Covent Garden which is worth a visit.

They have a great selection of their own beers and international beers (including good USA beers). Their beers are listed here-

I really wanted to try the Oyster Stout when I was there last year, but they'd run out at that time. I ended up bringing home a bottle of their 10th anniversary 10% stout. Yummy!
