So I was doing the weekly shop with the missus and spotted 1kg tins of 100% Malted Barley, in the health food section I think, for making drinks and cooking according to the label. Pretty much the same price as a kg of LME from my LHBS.
Is this the same thing, can I make a brew with this stuff? Would be very handy if I needed some at short notice.

Providing theres no preservatives it should be fine.
I seen something like that at coles, thinking it may be good for some JSAA

A couple of considerations:

The malt extract isn't necessarily designed for brewing which may mean:

- Break material isn't removed (which can be fixed with a decent boil length)
- High mash temperatures/low attenuation (the manufactures don't care about fermentability when its designed for biscuits)

Having said that, it may be ok - I haven't used it personally so I can't tell either way. But I'd suggest using the extract from your LHBS over this, particularly as it is the same price
