I don't know if 4 Pines is a great example of the style, but I wasn't all that wrapped in it.
In any case, I'll have 1007 yeast cake left from my alt ready to wash and re-use this weekend, so if anybody has some suggestions for a kolsch with a little more backbone than this offering, I be glad to hear it.

I just finished a frh in cologne 10 minutes ago.

I wouldn't say it's got much backbone. It's a dry beer. It's got several subtle flavours, but nothing big at all.

The bjcp sums it up pretty well.

I'm waiting for a train now, but will be back here in a few days to Try some others.

I had the 4 pines a while ago, but don't remember much about it. I don't think it was as dry as the frh though

You should try the Kolsch from Hunter Brewing company- much nicer!

Try a Peters Kolsch while you're there in Cologne, I found it much nicer than the fruh.

Didn't check this, so didn't try the peters.
Went into one of the pubs, probably frh, but can't remember. The beer was much more satisfying there.

I'm going to dusseldorf next week, so will be able to try the neighboring alt. Reckon that'll be awesome.

Was at bamberg 2 days ago. Rauchbier isn't for me.

Going by the style guidelines, it appears to be a pretty easy drinking beer.

e.g.

Overall Impression: A clean, crisp, delicately balanced beer usually with very subtle fruit flavors and aromas. Subdued maltiness throughout leads to a pleasantly refreshing tang in the finish. To the untrained taster easily mistaken for a light lager, a somewhat subtle Pilsner, or perhaps a blonde ale.

Just made me one of these.

Seriously the best beer I've ever made.
Don't imagine it's going to last long.
Even SWMBO loves it...

I tried the 4 Pines from DM's Ascot Vale some time ago, and loved it. Great lemony flavours.

I then tried it from other DM's, which seems to be the only place to find it, they seem to be rather bland.

Might try going back to DM Ascot Vale, and see if they handle their stock better than the others.
