At least he's not embarrassing us against our biggest trading partner.

Palmer is undoubtedly a tool of the highest order but I think the faux outrage over this harming trade relations is pretty dumb.

If it's in China's interest to trade with us they will, pretty much whoever mouths off. They don't trade with us because they like us or approve of our politicians. They trade because it benefits them (or they have to, either way).

It's also not like they can start buying our iron ore elsewhere (well they can but because it's essentially a fungible that means someone else's customer comes and buys ours).

That's one advantage of resources exporting, the customers can't decide one day to go and buy (for example) Greek iron ore because they don't like our policies, because there is none.

How can the person getting picked up from the airport be blamed for where the driver parked, as for Joe Hockey's comments about who uses the most fuel of course he was right, people will live within their means.
As for embarrassing politicians I reckon Kevin would have to get the Bronze Beazley award for that although when it came to interviewing himself he was excellent.

Palmers buffoonery aside, why isn't he getting booted out on his arse for such comments? Faux outrage? Hocky makes a gaffe about poor people and cars and you'd think he was calling for the re-institution of the white Australia policy.
Obviously being the village idiot has its perks.

Personally I think China would be quite happy to see us as serfs. Its just easier that way.

I always imagined that was pretty much how Rudds internal discourse went. Except he'd be sitting in the back of his commonwealth car speaking into a vanity mirror.

That's one way to reduce the ABC's expenditure. Everyone can interview themselves and the money saved can be given to the Rudd Consultancy Agency who would show people how to maximise their self-importance in order to more effectively interview themselves.

Actually, they are both Members (federal and otherwise)... Hockey though is a cabinet minister where Clive isn't.

At least ONE of them carries significant weight.

I can tell you which one I think is the biggest member, but I'm happy to leave it at that...

I don't get Clive Palmer. The guy is supposedly a billionaire or close to it, so he can't be stupid. Unless he's playing the "watch the left hand, while right hand is doing something else" game.

Or maybe he's just a tard.

I guess the left hand would be his **** for brains senator Jacqui Lambie then.

That ******* drawl..

Actually he was blatantly wrong and based the statement on incorrectly interpreted statistics from ABS. People with lower incomes are often living in areas that are remote and/or not well serviced by other transport options (for starters).

Hence his apology.

Embarassing politicians? Give me the list of those who aren't/weren't.
Bet it's really, really small.

High income earners spend an average of $70 / week on fuel low income earners spend an average of $42 / week on fuel so Joe was right, however the impact on low income earners is far more than on high income earners, we can't all be earning the same money, there has to be a top and bottom of the heap.
I think Joe apologised because Tony directed him to do so, and yes the list of politicians who do not embarrass either themselves or the nation would indeed be small.

I don't know how that makes him right. His words were: 'poor people either don't have cars or they don't drive very far', not 'low income earners spend less dollars on average on fuel (but a higher percentage of their overall income) than high income earners'. Additionally he was suggesting that the proposed excise would therefore impact less on low income earners so he was wrong on all counts.

As far as embarassment goes, I think the disabled car parking thing is pretty low down the list. Makes for an amusing photo but nothing more.
