Doing a 15 litre batch of goombas pale ale sans Nelson.
Start AG was 1060 after a week at 20c it's down to 1018. Fg should be 1015.
I dry hopped today and when I took a smell the fumes sort of burnt my nostrils. The sample I tasted was very yeasty.
Is this normal? I don't recall my last batch smelling like this.
I was scrupulously clean spraying everything with defender that I couldn't rinse with the stuff and washed it off with boiled water.

What are your thoughts? Am I being paranoid?
 
Did you smell the open fermenter, or the sample? If it was the fermenter, that is the CO2 blanket you are inhaling. It burns.

Yeasty is normal. Through my own brewing and sampling commercial beers I have found that I am fairly intolerant of yeasty/trub-like flavours in beer. Cold crash that bad boy for a few days (the longer the better if you are kegging) and that should clear right up.

Unless you are getting vinegar, apple or all-out disgusting flavours I'd say you are probably fine.
 
What sort of yeast did you use? Was the sample that you tasted cloudy and... yeasty? When I tastea hydro sample, it tastes a bit yeasty, but that's just the yeast that has come out of the tap as I'm taking the sample from the bottom of the fermenter.

Not sure about the burning nostrils part. The smell of alcohol does generally burn your nostrils, but again this is something that will be less noticeable once you carb the beer and the hops perk up a bit. Additionally, so close to the end of a ferment you'll get a lot of CO2 still coming out of solution so maybe it's this you're smelling.

Anyway, it'll be fine. Keg it and drink it.
 
Pour some in a glass and let it sit for a minute. Then smell again.

This question comes up pretty often, and that is usually the reason for the burning. ^
 
The yeasty smell/ taste was from the sample and I did take the cap off the fermenter and stuck my nose straight in there.
Thanks for the feedback. I will keep fermenting it for another week then cold condition it.
